How is this possible

If the timing belt has jumped a tooth or two on one of the gears ie Cam gear, it would throw off the timing. Most likely the check engine light is due to a cam or crank sensor not agreeing with the other sensor. I would not run the car until the timing belt is checked and timing marks are verified. Severe engine damage could occur Do you know what the code is.

No really, will know most likely tomorrow, but how a mechanic can go from heads to timing belt?..should i trust him?

Here is one way that can happen, they could have found that it has bent valves or something like that. That would be the heads and then in looking into it further they may have found that the timing belt jumped. The engine is an interference engine and if the timing belt jumps or breaks, as the pistons are going up and down before the engine stops, the Pistons will hit the valves and bend them. Because when an engine is "in Time" the valves open as the piston is traveling down in the cylinder. If the timing belt breaks, the valves stop immediately but the pistons are going to come back up and hit any valves in the way. Remember the engine even at idle is 700-900 Rpms so that 13 possible piston strikes per second. When you're looking at used cars with timing belts, it's good to know when the last one was replaced. Some manufacturers suggest every 60k

Wow, thank you so much, so if timing belt is replaced, we need to get a new water pump?

You're welcome Most Timing belt engines (not every one but most) water pumps are driven by the timing belt. If so, then replace it and also replace the tensioners and pulleys. Check autozone online for your car and see if they offer a "Timing component kit" for your car. There might be a couple different kits available but they will also tell you if the water pump is timing belt driven.
