Honda CR-V engine light on & off, sputtering while accelerating under load

Asked by SuperGlue Apr 07, 2015 at 07:36 PM about the 2004 Honda CR-V

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a used 2004 Honda CR-V for myself and my wife to use.  While test
driving it, we had absolutely 0 problems with it, everything checked out fine.  Now,
we've had it for about a month, and approx 8 days ago the engine light turned on whilst
driving up the hill towards my house and the engine began bucking.  If I let off the gas
pedal, the engine would smooth out, but accelerating past 2.5k RPM's would cause the
bucking and loss of power.

It chooses at random to do this, last night when I turned it on to drive it to work, the
engine light was on, but it's pretty much all coasting down the hill and to my work.
When I went to drive it home this morning from work, the engine light was off and I
was able to take it to 4k+ RPM's with no problem.  Now today, the light is back on and
the engine is bucking again.  There is only one mechanic shop within 50 miles of my
home, and previously all he recommended for any of my vehicle problems were new
fuel pumps, which was never the correct diagnosis on my previous vehicle.

I have an 05 CRV and similar thing happened. Engine light on and when driving uphill vehicle would hesitate and have loss of power. Had the engine light checked and it was a bad catalytic converter.
