Starter trying to engage with key off

I have 2006 F150 V8 Triton 5.4 and today after
starting it a few times and running it we tried to
start it it would not start but the starter was
clicking when the key was disengaged and could
not get it to go into neutral... Then jumped it off
and it cranks no problem... What is causing this?

I believe the system/computer needs sufficient power to engage the shifter. If your battery is exceptionally low it may cause the symptoms you are noting. Ensure you have a good battery and connections.
