4 wheel drive relay clicking under dash

Asked by summer2013 Jun 05, 2013 at 11:44 AM about the 2007 Ford Ranger

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i put my truch in 4x4 the other day and the relay under the dash went crazy clicking, the truck did go into 4x4 but it was had to tell because of the relay. normally it would click once to indicate it was in and the 4x4 light would come on. after i was done i turned the switch off to disengage the 4x4 and it came out but the relay kept clicking and the 4x4 light went off, now everytime i start the truck or shut it off this under dash relay (i think this is what it is) will click a few time and stop. any help to fix would be great

swap with another relay in the box and see if it clicks in another position. the relay may be bad

Push-button electronic 4x4? Manual or automatic hubs? Engine size? If I recall correctly, the 4x4 controls are in the GEM Module. If it keeps up, you can have it scanned for error codes. All 4 tires the same diameter? Transfer case full of fluid? Often, the motor on the Transfer case fails or sticks (it's not much more than a windshield washer motor with switches inside to tell the GEM where it is. A good scan tool can be a big help here or remove the motor and watch it move (or not move) while selecting 4x4 high, low and so forth.
