The battery light really means the alternator is acting up and there are voltage fluctuations that make the computer mad and it will do all kinds of stuff. Go to an auto parts store and have your battery and alternator tested for free and see what's going on. If I am correct about a failing alternator, your battery will soon become discharged to point it will stall and not have enough power to crank up. So don't turn the engine off until you are in a safe place or a repair shop.
