Question type: General

What are the true ways to ID if my 70’ SS camaro is a true
SS? I have an SS emblem on the steering wheel/ the
differential has a 12 bolt cover and it has duel exhaust
system. Is there a special number or letter indicated in the
VIN?

After doing more research I have confirmed only that it is a 1970 sports coupe built in July-August and did leave the factory with a V-8. But that’s about all I got. I do know this is not the original engine but everything else is.

Thanks, just wanting to confirm or nail down if it was in fact a true SS. Again everything seems to be leading that way but just hit the wall with a definitive answer on the V8 engine... Someone did say that there could be a “build” sheet on top of the gas tank so I will look there this weekend.

So I found the build sheet above the gas tank unfortunately it’s not legible. I can only read/make out certain section of it. Does anyone have a blank build sheet that would tell me where to look for the information on which V8 engine it shipped with?

On the cowl tag there will be series of ID numbers matching the VIN located on the dash beneath the windshield. The cowl tag will also have stamped L-34 for a 350 HP 396 Big Block car or it will have L-78 for a 375HP 396 Big Block car. On the SS models there are 2 fuel lines one of them is larger than what is on a non SS Big Block car. There is a 12 bolt rear end and a painted black tail light panel on all Big Block SS cars.

I did a quick VIN search and found your post. A family member may have been the original owner of it. I would like to talk if you're willing.

Check on the cowl tag on the fire wall to see if it is a Norwood (NOR) or a Van Nuys (L) or (BL) built car. Norwood cars are easy to I.D. They would have L-34 or L-78 right on the tag. Van Nuys cars are a bit harder to I.D. Look under the rear of the car, above the rear end for brackets that are welded to the frame for the rear sway bar, if the car is a true SS they'll be there.
