Disarm M60 alarm without FOB Remote

Asked by GuruBVCH5 Dec 20, 2018 at 07:10 PM about the 1996 Subaru Legacy

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car is armed and I am unable to get it started
without my FOB remote (Remote sends a signal
but isn't working. Battery has been changed) I don't
have the pin code to override it and I cant identify
where the override button is by all the wires. Can
someone help me out a little. Will I need a new
remote? Or can someone help me find where the
button is?

Honestly... That alarm system has a reputation for being extremely difficult to live with and diagnose. I have seen a few vehicles with this in the used car world, and it always gets removed and thrown in the trash as soon as the car shows up with one. You will probably need a new remote, I would search online for better instructions, or contact the manufacturer. Best of luck.

Also... The override button (if equipped) could be anywhere, as there is no standardized location for it.

Thanks Mate, Would you know what the override button looks like for me to have a look around for it?

It could be anything, from a numeric keypad, to a keyed switch, to a cheap toggle switch. Most likely (if equipped with one) it will be hidden under the driver side of the dash, I have even seen override switches on the inside of the glovebox as well. Did you recently purchase the car, and if so was it from an individual/private sale or a dealer? If you purchased it from an individual, try contacting them and asking, as they are probably the only other people who would know. Wish I could give you a better answer, but the location is usually determined by the installer, based on the request of the customer who purchased the system. An example: Mechanic: "Ok sir, where would you like the override switch for the alarm placed?".... Customer: "Somewhere it won't be easily found"..... Lol.

I have bought a new one (it's on its way) and I have looked at the programming instructions to pair the new one but the first instruction is 'Disarm the system'. How will I be able to do that and pair the new remote if I cannot disarm the system without my old FOB key?

The only way I know of would be to disconnect the car battery and let the system run out of power, then re-install the battery cable (could take hours). When you do this, remove *only* the negative or black cable from the battery. A warning, some versions of this system had a built in reserve battery, I highly recommend disconnecting the underhood alarm/speaker while attempting this. In addition some units also have a programming button on the unit itself that will need to be held down while pairing the new remote. There were a few versions of this system produced over the years.
