2001 subaru forester engine swap

Asked by Kevin_johnson91 Jul 13, 2015 at 05:17 PM about the 2001 Subaru Forester

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I have a 2001 Subaru forester, I threw a
rod through the engine and now must do a
swap. I have 2 questions.

1) the engine in my car is the ej251 it was
used from 2000 - 2002 in my car, must I use
another ej251? Or what other options do I
have for a direct mount with little to no
modification needed?

2) I have had a few subaru guys tell me that
if they were in my situation they would put
an STI engine in. What STI engine would I
need to use and how much extra
modification would needy I be done? I
assume it is not a simple plug and play
swap as would be if I just replaced the
engine with an exact match.

1. Should be able to use Stage 2 (SOHC) 99-04 engines but you may have to keep your intake and sensors to match your wiring harness. I've posted about this topic twice in the last few weeks. 2. I don't know anything about "sti" engines. Check out www.subaruforester.org and read this:: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f66/when-replacing- engine-what-fits-what-124052/

There are actually a lot of easy swaps you can do with a little extra cash. The only problems you face when swapping something non subaru in is clearance problems but there is still a good handful of engines you can put in all the way from honda motors to 13b rotarys.
