Could be an air bubble in the system. Make sure the cooling fans are working. The water pump or the radiator itself could be the problem. Before you replace any parts, flush the system if you have not already.

If it overheats at idle or slow speed driving it's an airflow problem. Check the radiator cooling fans and the area in front of the radiator. Make sure it's not blocked by dirt, leaves, or other debris. If it overheats when you drive at higher speeds, like expressway driving, it's a coolant circulation problem. Make sure the cooling system is full and bleed any air out of the system. If that doesn't work, a cooling system flush may be needed using a chemical cleaner to remove any rust and deposits from inside of the cooling system. After that the water pump and thermostat are suspect. If a stop leak product has been used, flush it out of the cooling system! At best a stop leak product is a Band Aid fix that usually causes more trouble than they fix!! Hope that helps! Jim

Not so crazy, Peter. Engine oil does help cool the engine. That's one of the reasons the oil pan has a sump that hangs down in the airflow as the vehicle is driving along! Jim
