How long should the replacement timing belt, tensioner and parts last?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

At 116900 miles the tensioner and timing belt of our 2003 Lexus es300 broke in the middle of a major highway way out of town.  The recommended local mechanic - who rebuilds racecars as well - says that there is no way this should have happened at this mileage for the new parts.  We have had all our work on this car done by our local Lexus dealer.

I dont trust any timing belt to last past 60,000. A chain maybe 100,000. Some manufacturers say they may last longer but the damage caused my them breaking are costly and I wouldnt take that chance.

I did not make it clear that the original timing belt, water pump, pulleys, etc. were replaced at 90,000 miles. So the replacement lasted 26000 miles. Bad parts or a bad job done at the Lexus dealership is the question.

It should have leasted far more than 26,000. I would guess a bad part.
