The car is running hot because the coolant has been lost, escaping by the hole in the reservoir. Most probably, the check engine light came on to tell you that there is a problem with the cooling system. I tried to patch a coolant reservoir once and it didn't hold, had to replace it. Replace the one in the car and refill the engine with coolant, either full strength or 50/50. I prefer full strength, if you use it, check the owner's manual or directions on the product container for the amount of mixture required according to the capacity of your vehicle's radiator. Hope this will solve the overheating problem.
