Mazda 1994 B4000 brake issue

What would cause my Mazda 1994 B4000 brakes not to work randomly when
in reverse?

Check the rear brakes. Maybe they are not assembled correctly or something like a hold down spring broke. But I would assume that there would be some kind of brake issue forward also.
