Door Lock with Motor RunnIng

Asked by CaroCroc Nov 21, 2018 at 05:38 AM about the 2018 Subaru Forester

Question type: General

Is there a way to lock the doors with the
motor running and then be able to use the
fob to unlock it? I understand that there is a
way to do it but then you have to manually
unlock the door with flimsy little key that was
not met for repeated use (will end up
breaking). Also remote start not an option
because it cuts off in 15 minutes. I have a
dog I need to be able to leave heat/air on for.
There must be a way to override the “won’t
lock with motor running” feature.

From my knowledge, you can only do that if you have a remote starter or if you take the physical key out of the FOB, and manually lock the driver side door. I'm not sure if it's a safety reason, an emission reason, or even a key security reason for them doing it. I just ran into this issue today with a customer. These are the best solutions I have found so far.

Go into vehicle settings, auto unlock and turn it off. Open the driver side door. Manually lock. The car will be running and stay locked. To unlock you must use the key inside the FOB.
