Kia Sedona 2002 steering is hard when car is not moving

Asked by Sabinita Oct 19, 2011 at 12:03 PM about the 2002 Kia Sedona

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I am trying to leave a tight parking place in reverse, I cannot turn the wheels right or left without moving the car,  because it feels very hard and makes a biting noise, sometimes there is no space to move the car. What is wrong?

HI there. it sounds like you have a power steering fluid leak. you need to get it to a garage ASAP to have it investigated. If you keep driving it with no fluid then you will do damage to your pump and steering rack so chop chop

I agree with Phil, you are definitely having a problem with the power steering but look under the hood and see if you see anything strange, like maybe no belt on which operates the power steering unit. Have you noticed any fluid leaks under your car. Some have a magnetic power assist steering which is hard to explain, but helps when you aren't up to speed and in tight spots like your explaining. If you have lost the serpentine belt that would be an easy fix and save money so it's at least worth taking a look under the hood and under the car and see if you notice anything that doesn't look right. You don't want to go to a shop and have them charge you a fortune for something you might have been able to fix yourself. But generally speaking any leaks, or steering pump is not something you will be able to fix, just look at the belt, and just a general inspection and then if the belts still on, hall a@s to a shop and get it fixed as Phil said, not doing so will cause you more damage. I am only saying this because I lost a belt one time and it took me a second to figure out WTF, and looked under the hood and well there it is, belt off, put it back on, went and bought a new one and fixed.

It's the u joints in the steering column one is above floor board behind pedals and the other is above steering rack you can see it with a flashlight and look down next to brake master cylinder the joint is right above steering rack spray both with penetrating fluid or lubricant turn wheels lock to lock and sticky steering disappears. The ujoint get tight over time and binds common on the sedona alot of sedona ow erst have replaced pump and rack to find its the intermediate shaft some replace and get another 50k out of it and others just lube it with there scheduled maintenance good luck
