2015 GMC Terrain Intellilink Screen Won't Fire Up

Asked by TerrainHeadaches Aug 02, 2019 at 04:22 PM about the 2015 GMC Terrain

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The Intellilink Touch Screen/Backup Camera on my 2015 GMC Terrain has
lately taken longer to 'fire up' when I start the car, but usually does. Today it
worked fine when I first turned on the car, but at my second stop wouldn't fire
up. It *eventually* clicked on a couple miles down the road. Then after work,
same: came on when I turned over the car, no problem. Second stop,
nothing, third stop, nothing. Just a black screen. Dealer says to bring it in for
them to diagnose, but I live an hour away. Any guesses?

Welp, since nobody's posted anything, I'll share updates from my 'certified' GMC service center. Loose wire. Problem is, when the mechanic fixed it, it failed a few minutes later (before I pulled out). Back it went into the bay. Back he came with it, all systems go. But he said the wire might/probably need replacing. Wire = cheap, replacing = not cheap. Sure enough, a little while later when I started the car, nothing. Crickets. Now the trick will be getting them to honor my bumper-to-bumper extended warranty. Because I know y'all are obvi dying to know the outcome. -_______________-

Hi everybody. Here's what finally happened: the entire unit had to be replaced. But not before the mechanic decided the problem was a severed wire, and a new one was ordered. It arrived with one end crushed, so another order and another wait. After the certified GMC center finally replaced the 'bad' wire with a new one, the thing worked for about a minute. Fortunately, this particular dealer/service center honored my extended warranty (at that moment I was so relieved I agreed to buy the warranty when I bought the car). Funny thing, though. They pulled the old unit, dropped in the new one, and then when I came to pick up the car, once again, it wouldn't fire up. They kept it overnight, and the mechanic took the entire assembly out, but left it attached to the car, and then fired it up again. It worked. So they *very carefully* reinstalled it, and this time it FINALLY worked, consistently. They kept it for several hours, and just kept turning over the engine to make sure everything worked correctly. Service manager's theory: there was a wire that was getting jiggled loose somehow in the process of reinstalling the unit. (which of course begs the question, was that the problem in the first place?) Dunno if that's true or not, but there ya go, for what it's worth. Bottom line for replacing the entire thing was ~$800, my out of pocket was a hundred bucks, and when everything was said and done, I was about two months waiting for the problem to be resolved. Good luck to you. Fancy technology is a thing of beauty...when it works. I've had my Terrain for a couple of years, bought it as a lease trade-in, and it was in pretty pristine condition, beautiful interior, lots of bells and whistles, etc. If there's an Achilles heel to this car, maybe it's Intellilink. Let's hope they work out the bugs and get it right in future versions of the car.

I have a 2015 Terrain that I purchased new. So far I have had to replace the air conditioner, wind shield wiper motor, and now the radio system. Charged 100.00 to diagnosis, and it is $1300.00 to replace. When you have a 6 year payment plan this is over the top. I fortunately paid cash for mine....could not imagine making payments AND repair bills. They did have a recall in Canada for the wiper motor, just not in the US. Just received notice of recall in US so reimbursement coming. Thank you ! Hopefully they will get a recall soon on the radio system.

Hi, I have the same exact problem. I have a 2015 GMC Terrain that I *just* finished paying off this month. My warranty expired some time ago, but after months of driving with no radio and screen, I finally took my car in to get it looked at ($135 just so they can inspect and diagnose). According to the dealership, it needs a new screen and radio and will cost $1900 + tax (?!) I passed.
