Is the check engine light illuminated? If so, what are the codes?

No. Check engine light or any other indicators comes on.

If the original question did not clearly state, the problem is intermittent and not constant. The problem started a few days ago, and maybe happening a bit more frequent on a daily basis.

I have been having the same issue with my 2012 Hyundai Sonata with roughly 120k miles have you found out what’s causing the issue?

I’m having the same issue with 2011 sonata.

It’s been 3 days since I tried this and I haven’t had any issues with my car when I’m trying to accelerate i put marvel mystery oil Lucas fuel injector cleaner and filled up my tank with premium gas so far it hasn’t given me any issues

I had the exact same problem. It turns out it's because of your break pedal stopper deteriorating. There is a recall for that specific part so it's free at a dealership to get fixed. The Hyundai term for what you're experiencing is "activation of the engine management system's brake pedal override feature"

Same exact issue on my 2012 sonata 2.0T. When I looked up brake pedal stopper deteriorating like Andrew suggested, it described my issues perfectly. Especially the taillights staying on continuously, and the traction control light coming on.

I’m having The same issue with my 2011, yesterday I noticed that my brake lights would not go off, all of my lights and car were turned off, I had to press in the break to get the light to turn off, does anyone have any idea how much this issue will cost to fix?

Chrystiana - I think you have to replace the Brake Pedal Switch... the part is less than $5 and about $10-$15 if you buy the original from Hyundai... However.. there is a recall that is in place that replaces part of the Break Pedal switch (the pad). Check with your local dealership and give them the VIN number they can tell you if it is part of the recall.....

My car (2011 Sonata) had the pad of the brake pedal switch replaced under the recall more than a year ago... however, whenever I am driving, car will randomly stop accelerating and i have to take my foot off the pedal and press it again and it will accelerate...one time it happened on a left turn and I nearly got hit by the oncoming car.... most of the time it is at slow speeds, however, i have also had experience when it happened at 55-60 MPH. I took it to the dealer and they did a diagnostic... they said it is the "Park Break Warning Switch" part - 93830-3S000.... I was assuming that it would be the regular brake switch after reading everything online.... has anyone had this problem... and if so.. did they have to replace the Park Brake Switch?

I’m having the exact same problem now with my 2011 Sonata. It just started this weekend. I took it to Sears Auto and had my Fuel Injector cleaned and when they hooked it up to the diagnostic machine they couldn’t find the problem. I have no check engine lights or anything popping up on the car. Taking it to the dealership in the morning to see what they say. Hopefully I can report back

So i found out dealership meant to switch the Brake Switch, not the parking brake light switch (as they had put on the result of diagnostic). I went ahead and got he brake switch replaced, since that has been done. The car has not lost power / acceleration when i press on the accelerator.. will continue driving it and keep you all updated.

I just experienced the same problem with my 2012 Hyundai Sonata SE; driving home from work last Monday, on the highway, my car suddenly started decelerating and I had to take my foot off the gas then press down again to get going. I made a service appointment and then Googled the problem, which brought me to this site, fortunately.It was exactly as Andrew said -the brake pedal stopper pad. I took it to the dealer and they said that they were going to run a diagnostic and I asked them to check the brake pedal stopper pad first so I wouldn't have to pay a hundred bucks for the diagnostic. Sure enough the service rep said that he was able to start the car without pressing down on the brake pedal and knew immediately that it was the brake pedal stopper pad. He said it is actually not under recall; however it was the subject of an extended warranty 15 years/ unlimited mileage, so they fixed it for free. It definitely took care of the problem.

Did you get your problem resolved? If so, what was the solution. I'm sitting at the dealership right now & they are telling me until it throws a code they cannot help me. This is at lake norman Hyundai in Cornelius nc

The brake pedal stopper does not cause any codes to appear for a scantool. It's literally a matter of looking underneath your brake pedal and checking the black rubber disk that's attached to it for wear. It will take a dealership tech 30 seconds and should be under warranty.

My hubs has a code scanner also, nothing shows up . It's just like Andrew said, they should be able to check it super quick without running any diagnostics.

I had the same issue. Had both the Brake Pedal stopper & Brake light switch replaced in my 2012 Hyundai Sonata Limited. Less than 10k miles later it is doing it again. I am having issues accelerating. First only at high speeds then at like 20 MPH. I noticed that my car was having issues starting today so i think my battery is dying. Has anyone had acceleration issues linked to a dying battery?

I had the exact same issue. I took my car to the dealer who said they couldn't find anything wrong after 3 days of not having a vehicle. I had done some research on my own and suggested to the mechanic (I'm sure they love that) that it was the brake pedal stopper. He practically laughed in my face. He then said they thought it could be the accelerator something or other. It was over $500 but at this point I needed my car back. I gave the go ahead only to have it keep happening. I decided to look up the brake pedal stopper price and found it on Amazon for $7 and some change. My husband pulled out the old one and could see instantly it was bad. He replaced it in under 10 minutes and the problem was completely resolved!

I Have a 2011 Hunday Sonata. 41000 miles Same issue. You may think the car is in need fo a mayor repair. If you are reading this. Dont panic. Follw the advise as I did. Change the brake pedal stopper first.Then see what happens. It may be all it needs. Is not the actual part the problem but it makes the brake sensor no to work as it should. That little thing makes such a fuss. If you dont have the part there is a couple of videos on YouTube that can help you with that. Thank you.

I have a 2012 Hyundai sonata hybrid. While I was driving down the street my car black out completely. I had it tow to my house, and called a few dealers. They say it my 12 volt battery, I replace my battery and still my car won't turn on. Does somebody knows when does the hybrid goes bad?

I had the same problem '11 sonata, I would loose acceleration, cruise control cancel did not work and the set button only sometimes. They replaced the brake light stop switch and I still has problems with cruise/acceleration, so they replaced the inhibitor switch and had the transmission fluid drained and filled. Ran good for about a week but lost acceleration three times today. No codes, I am clueless.

It's not the switch or inhibitor, it's a rubber stopper. You can change it yourself witb no tools and less than a minute. Google hyundai sonata brake stopper fix.

It’s because of the bearings I bet!!! I’m having an issue with my 2013 Hyu Son, and all arrows point to the most recent recalls. I can’t drive over 60 mph/ 2000 rpm because the engine has gone into safe mode or whatever. No codes came up for me either and a mechanic told me yesterday that these issues are related to the recall that Hyundai just had. Rod in the engine is next!!

So was it the brake recall that caused the acceleration issue or something else?

I work on sonata 2012 with 2.4l issue with accelerating gas pedal and between 60-80mph the rpm drop down and loose power . Part replace STOP LAMP SWITCH solve the problem

I might as well have to check the brake pedal stopper.

Having the same issue on my daughter's 2012 Sonata, not part of the recall. We are picking up the part and will see if that fixes the issue.

I have a 2015 sonata electric and when depressing the gas peddle from a stop it forgets to go and rolls for about 5 secs before it catches and goes. Nearly got in an accident because of the no acceleration. Help!!

It's a brake light switch, look and see if your brake lights are staying on. That little rubber stopper on it is gone or bout gone. Fix it yourself and it cost like$20.00. the put your hand and the brake lever and run it up, it's the first thing your hand hits. Good luck, it's kind of a tight squeeze.

I wanted to edit my response above (daughter's 2012 Sonata) but we did buy the rubber stopper. We were going to get one from the auto parts store, but my daughter drove to the dealership to buy it. The guy just gave it to her for free. And she replaced it herself. It is in a tight spot, but it's doable.

Hi to all, I had the same intermittent gas pedal "stall". Google "solenoid" if you don't know what it is. It is basically an electronic coil "switch" that moves when electrical current is sent to it and it moves and does something to the engine, In the past switches and cables or linkages would control engine functions. On the Hyundai problem there are no cables or linkages but wires and sensors and solenoids. Took ours to the dealer for the brake pedal rubber pad (Caution!! do not let them do a computer check - very expensive!!). I got out with the cost of the rubber pad and labor under $30.00. If you want to get to know the area of the car under the steering wheel then just buy the rubber stopper. None of this fixed the accelerator problem. I read somewhere that the MAP Sensor might be the problem (Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor) - sounds sexy doesn't it? I got a new one off of Ebay for under $20.00 shipped. You can look it up on the web, It is located at the front of the engine attached to the throttle body? It is held in place by one small 10mm? bolt and connected to the electrical system by a cable connector which is an easy connection. Had wifey take the car out and even she recognized the improvement. Definitely better get up and go and a noticeable change in the accelerator "stall".

Ok so I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata with this same problem but I fixed it forever so this will never happen to anyone else that looks at this page. I used a plastic fastener and a washer, like showed in the picture.

I have the same problem in my ‘11 Sonata Limited for the past couple of weeks. Thought it was a tuneup issue. Tonight, my car was started without stepping on the brake. I am not paying for the tuneup until I change that stupid rubber piece on my brake pedal.

I have the same issue and also it happened to me that the break lights did not go off after switch off the car. I have taken Pinkesh's advice and bought a replacement for the break light switch. I will be installing it in the afternoon then will observe if the acceleration issue goes away

Since installing a new break light switch my issues has been resolved its been months now with no issues

My 2012 hyundai is doing the same thing except for the lights and turning on without pressing the brake. It just randomly wont accelerate. I also have a transmission fluid leak but i refill it every so often and it seems to fix the problem. However recently it seems like its not fixing the problem anymore. Im going to try and replace that part that andrew mentioned and use a transmission sealer fluid and ill get back to you guys with an update.

I have a 2012 Sonata and found this forum because the descriptions all fit EXACTLY what was going on. I thought at first even bad gas ? because it would lose power and somewhat "sputter" for a second...the brake lights confirmed it though! After I read that , I remembered I had trouble getting my lights off and then the brake lights suddenly went on by themselves even with the car off for hours and locked (watch out for this because it killed my battery when it happened overnight) When I Made my appointment and I told them about this issue on line and it was the first thing they checked and the brake peddle stopper was cracked! he actually said it was almost in half. This really helped me get this issue fixed easily and economically Check the peddle stopper Also if you want to confirm the problem have someone follow you. while on the way to the dealership I stayed on the phone with my husband & he said when I "lost power" my brake lights went crazy ! he said they flickered and then even stayed on intermittently while I was driving 60mph . hope this helps

I have an issue with my sonata 2012/13. Any time i step on the throttle, the car goes off. Engine check light is not on. The car is extremely slow is accelerating. Please advise with possible cause and solutions to resolving this issue

I had the same issue after this happening a couple of times the hyundai sonata 2011 stopped and then would only go at about 15 miles per hour. the engine was knocking loudly. I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited with about 140k miles. I have had the same issue with acceleration but no break light issues. Mine is more like the original comment. I changed the PCV Valve and it was great for about a month but is now doing it again. I’m going to try replacing it again, maybe I got a faulty one from Amazon. If that doesn’t work I found that the speed sensor for the transmission might need to be replaced. Hopefully I can figure it out before being forced to take it to the dealership!

Hello, I am having this issue with my 2011 Hyundai Sonata. I already had my engine replaced under the recall last year but now it's starting to give me this new problem. I checked the rubber stopper and it looks fine and my brake lights aren't on all the time. Wondering what do to do now
