It is likely the dreaded rear differential pinion tail bearing failing. This is apparently a very common Land Rover problem, but has never been addressed as a recall. Land Rover issued a Technical Service Bulletin LTB00342 (Issue 3) in Aug 2011 that basically says this noise problem can be repaired by replacing the bearing in the rear differential, and it's not necessary to replace the entire rear differential assembly. The TSB indicates this bearing replacement is several hours of work. Others have discussed repair fees between $1,900 - $3,000, and said repair shops may opt to replace the whole rear diff assembly. I looked up the repair process in the manual and it is well beyond a DIY repair, to the extent that replacing the whole thing would indeed be easier--just cost more.
