Front grill on 1972 Superbeetle

I have a 1972 VW Superbeetle and I am wondering if the front grill serves any
purpose or is it just there for looks? I'm thinking of customizing this area of the
car and want to make sure I'm not screwing with some intended function.

agreed, if there is no A/C it's a void behind the grill and you can customize as you like.
