Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 Taurus and I have no heat and low compression on #1 cylinder. My car misfires when it is at an idle. Does any one know what could be wrong?

Hello, You could have a number of problems in the car, or a combination of more than one. Your bad heat could be caused by a thermostat problem, and the compression can be caused by oil not getting to the cylinders (i.e. low oil). I would recommend bringing the car to a mechanic to have it checked out. Best of luck! CarGrrl

Yes it could be many things, it sounds a lot like a blown head gasket or a crack in the block or piston. Is there water in the oil? It will look milky on the dipstick. Is there oil in the water? You will be able to see droplets in the water if you take off the radiator cap(after the engine is cool of course). It could be cracked rings on the piston.

I would go with the Occam's Razor first, before I tackled a blown head gasket, or a cracked piston. I think that the two problems are not related. The low compression could be caused by a few things, but how low is it really? If it is just a little bit lower, then I might be nothing to worry about. But on the heat, my money is on a plugged heater core. The stalling could be a bunch of things, but start with the simplest to fix first. Try a new thermostat, then perhaps a fuel filter, it won't hurt to dump some dri gas, or STP gasoline treatment, the latter being just in case you got some moisture in your tank. It might be something that you take to your mechanic. You do have a mechanic, right? I know that when I find one whom I can trust, I stick with them for a long time, since finding a good mechanic is harder than finding a good wife.
