My 1999 GMC Jimmy is not accelerating when I push on the gas, what is wrong with it?

Coming home today I felt a let down on acceleration after a corner, and
then I push on the gas to go and the car pops up to 4k rpm but the speed
doesn't change... I then lay off the gas pedal and the car sort of "bumps"
forward and I press on the gas and I can accelerate again. I come to a stop
light and once it turns green, I push on the gas and the same problem
arises, the car goes to 20 mph and the rpm climbs -  going from 2k to 4k
with no speed change... I then lay off of the gas and I feel the same push
forward, and the car accelerates normally... What is wrong with the car???
Please help!
