Emissions regulations went into effect beginning the 1968 model year. Except for California who enacted their own beginning the 1966 model year. The carburetor on you '84 may be computer controlled. Do you have a "check engine" light or a "choke" light? If a "choke" light you're not computer controlled. What did it fail for? HC, CO2, or NOX? Your truck MUST be at operating temperature when you test the emissions or it WILL fail! OBD II (1996 & newer) vehicles that doesn't matter. If you failed for HC and/or NOX you're running too lean or too hot. If you failed for CO2, you're running too rich or too cold. If you have a catalytic converter (trucks over a certain GVWR didn't) you might look at replacing that as a last resort with a cheap universal one. HTH. -Jim

26 or more model years old in NY are exempt from emissions inspections. Guess he's not in NY.

That's good. Then you already know what I said is correct. Glad we're on the same page.

yuuuuup , that is correct . still dont know what state this blazer is in . you'd be surprised to see how many people have no clue to inspection rules, including the police, i once had a cop come in for a safety inspection on a new jeep , it passed , but for some reason he thought the inspection was free. I think he was confused with the insurance inspection which they did at this station also, but he gave us a real hard time over ten bucks.
Rucko answered 9 months ago
yeah safety inspection is only 10 bucks if the car is a year old or less or more then 26. anything in between needs an emissions & safety check , which was $37. Ive been out of new york for a few years now so it might have gone up since then.
