Timing chain broke

An "interference motor" is one where the valve's can possibly contact the pistons if the timing is off (and if the timing belt or chain breaks, your timing is definitely going to be off). You can Google your engine type to see whether it is an interference engine or not. I believe the 2.0 is, the 2.4 DOHC is not, not sure about the 2.7 and 3.0. If the timing belt did break, you'd want to open motor up anyhow to inspect for damage. I don't know what motor you have but repair costs may be higher than a used replacement engine or even a remanufactured engine. If you plan on a rebuild your mechanic would obviously (or at least hopefully) know if it's an interference and whether damage to valves and pistons may have occurred.
