have 98 Deville. It is hard to shift gear stick on steering column. Actual transmission runs good. Is problem in steering column?

most likely a worn linkage on tranny.

Yes, it is in the steering column. There is a pivot joint on the column that needs to be greased. I've had to do it on several cadillacs, and other GM models.
