i have a 19798 ford ranchero 500 302, just took it out of storage it reversed fine as soon as i went to drive it slips into neutral when it trys to shift to second gear. reverse still works. if i shut car off and restart goes into drive but problem repeats itself, i put a new rearend in last fall before storing could this be something to do with problem?

I got car 2 years ago  from estate of a neighbor that owned it since new, was allways maintained and stored and well taken care of,  he did tell me a few years back he replace original tranny

First thing to check is the transmission fluid level. Being low on fluid will cause it to slip.

fluid is fine nice and red and does not smell burnt at all, im thinking this could be a linkage problem, its a collum shift
