Engine cylinder different sizes?

Asked by emillauritsen Sep 23, 2016 at 02:31 AM about the 2005 Ford C-Max Energi

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello. We are having a school project, and one of the questions is: "Try to explain why there is a small size difference between each cylinder". It might be because our measurements are wrong, but is there any answer on why? And can the cylinder size be different for each cylinder to another? Btw the difference is very small (like 0,3 mm)
Sorry for my bad English

You will see a slite difference in diameter after it's been re-machined. Depending on bore size and manufacturer, there's specs, the bigger the bore the higher tolerances even when brand new

The rings are spring loaded and compensate for slight differences in diameter

.03 mm = .0012 inch, it is possible you measured incorrectly or measured in a different location in the cylinder. It is also possible that you measured correctly and there is a small difference in cylinder size. A cylinder will wear more at the top than at the bottom thus causing what is called "cylinder taper". Too much taper and the rings will not properly control the oil and the engine will consume oil.
