I own a 1970 ford fairlane 500. To my

If its a pull switch for your headlights when you turn the knob it adjusts the dash lights. This switch has a simple rheostat in it for the dash lights which can get dirty with age and not function. Take out the switch and clean with WD40. If that doesn't fix it replace the switch.
