This is not a common problem on the 2008 Dodge. Did you find what caused it?

My 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 caught fire last week at 180,000 miles. No modifications made to the vehicle. I drove about 7 miles round trip to the post office and returned home. I parked on the street and went in to make lunch. Sat down and opened Facebook to see a notification from our local page that a truck on our street was on fire. I walked out to see what what was going on and saw the Leander Fire Department putting out the fire in my truck. The Chief seemed to think it started by the master cylinder. I can't imagine what would have happened if it had occurred while I was at the Post Office with my dogs inside or if had been parked in our driveway where the house most likely would have caught fire.

well our 2005 well maintained Dodge Ram 1500 with 170,000 miles had been sitting for the last 2 weeks in front of our house not driven. Looked outside and saw light white smoke coming from under hood. By the time I walked out our front door the truck had flames coming from under the hood. Truck was totaled - Dodge response - truck was old...............really - no concern as to how or why it would just go up in flames!

Yeah, something is going on. This simply should not just happen.

My 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 bighorn w/ a 5.7L 130kmi. Suddenly caught fire while sitting in my driveway last drove 3 days ago. Any poss. reasons ???

We contacted Dodge who told us they would send someone to investigate. We received a letter 10 days later from their "arm chair" investigator stating - it was a 2005 truck - may not have been maintained - any factor could have caused it............REALLY how about following through and sending someone to find out WHY? This was not the first time this has happened since others I have had the same issues - class action law suit next!

I agree. I got the same "it is not Dodge's fault letter. Seems to be too many trucks catching fire for no reason.

Same thing my 2005 Dodge 1500 after sitting for 4 or 5 days just went up in flames for no reason. It had no problems. It was a great truck.

my 2002 with the 5.9 magnum caught fire sitting at a stop light. heard a pop noise and fire started shooting out from under hood.

Really need to get as many people on board and see if we can file a class action suit. It took Mercedes Benz awhile to step up to the plate and take responsibility not only nation wide but world wide with their recent car fires!!

Can't explain why it went up in flames... fire Marshall said it def came from engine... water pump was replaced a few months ago

Many Ram's showing up here burnt to the ground for no reason. Mine was well maintained and burnt last January. Dodge had no reason.

Has anyone had any luck with Dodge doing anything about this ? I just can't wrap my head around this. Truck was parked for at least 7 hours before the sparks started - just watched security footage and it sparked a few times and then just blew. It appears it started on the drivers side of the engine.

I sent documentation to Dodge along with video - their "chair side" investigator stated that our Dodge Ram 1500 was old and may not have been maintained was MR. KON's response from Dodge prior to clearing his desk before his vacation. Here is another - Dodge dealership in Hazlet on Highway 35 burnt down a couple of years ago......cause of the fire we heard back then was Dodge truck in bay area caught on fire after hours. Really would like to get this all grouped together to get as much information about of these fires.

5 people found this helpful.
320

I agree. There might be a class action suit to be had. Seems like the dealership in Hazlet would have had something to say about this....

530

It is a DODGE dealership so I don't think they will be volunteering any information on their own. Will continue to pursue this and how many people can document their issues. On another note - I was corrected on the issues I stated above about the Mercedes - it was BMW cars that were finally recalled world wide for just going up in flames.

I'm doubtful Dodge will do anything but I keep thinking about people that park them in their garages look at these pictures from our truck

Dodge is the one furtherest to the left 2012 2500 Cummings parked for 6 hours prior to this

I still can't wrap my head around how a truck that was very well maintained jjst goes on fire. We watched the security footage and there was three sparks and then bam the front end by the drivers side was engulfed in flames within a minute.

530

so I assume there is a police report / fire department documentation on this?

My 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 blew up yesterday. I hadn't driven it in 4 or 5 days. It was well maintained and had 120K miles on it. Besides changing the stereo out 18 months ago, it was completely stock.

2 people found this helpful.
180

Here's another picture. Luckily I was parked far enough away from my house, and the wind wasn't blowing towards the house.

3 people found this helpful.
530

WOW!! Have you contacted Dodge directly to inform them? Dodge needs to address this issue.

1 people found this helpful.
530

Yes, you were very lucky it was parked away from the house. Again, documentation, police and fire reports are what is needed for an answer from DODGE as to why their trucks are catching fire.

2 people found this helpful.
180

I have a police report. Haven't reached out to Dodge yet. It was a bit of a crazy day yesterday. I've got my insurance coming out to take a look at the truck on Thursday.

1 people found this helpful.
530

Well good luck~! Unfortunately for me I did not have fire coverage on the truck - who knew! What bothers me more and more about this is Dodge's unresponsive attitude towards this issue. You would think they would want to try to find out why their trucks are going up in flames. It was not a ONE time thing it is and has happened to several people all with the same story.

180

Thanks, I'll reply back if I make any progress. I tried tweeting at the @RamCares account a few hours ago, and pointed at this conversation, along with pictures & video of my truck. No response yet.

I'm so sorry this happened to you - our truck is one pictured above ^^ happened Sunday night - 2012 2500 Cummins - was parked for 7 hours before fire started. It was windy/raining the night it happened. Fire Marshall said it was something in engine driver side - but impossible to pin point exactly what since the entire engine compartment was just obliterated. I live in NY - where is everyone else from?

2 people found this helpful.
530

Too many of us on this list with same issues and NO answers or really NO interest except making sure they don't admit their is a problem. I keep reminding myself how lucky we were that the kids were not in the car or it was not in our garage but still a perfectly well maintained - perfect condition truck - goes up in flames..........not normal. @ Shopaholic - l am from NJ

Lol, not yet they don't. I'll give them some time to try and respond. I'm from NJ as well. I forgot to crop the one picture, so you can probably figure out exactly where I live from the firetruck. Might need to edit that...

I am looking at setting up a survey to put out online for anyone impacted by Dodge Ram trucks that have caught on fire for no reason. It is a shame that Dodge continues to ignore this issue.

There's clearly a problem here. I'm traveling for work this week, but was looking at potentially getting a site set up where we can consolidate all of our stories. If I can get it up in the next few weeks I'll let everyone know.

SW Pa. A good friends house just burned. 20?? dodge ram in the garage. preliminary reports say the fire started in the engine compartment. I just found this website after typing "dodge truck fires" in google search... I will post more as i find out. seems to me Dodge is going to need to step up to the plate!

We need to get all of us together in one forum for sure !! My husband belongs to a bunch of Ram owners Facebook pages (he loves his truck more than me lol!!) and e just found three more people that had the same exact issue happen to them. Truck parked for hours and then just goes up in flames. Most are 2012-2014 2500's My husband's truck had the Cummins engine. I'm on Facebook if anyone wants to find me - Tracy Cozzolino-Baldi maybe we can figure out how to get all of our complaints to Dodge or get media attention so Dodge will have to address these issues instread of just issuing a letter saying - sorry your truck is just old

So much for my insurance company hunting Dodge down. They're offering me $8600 for the loss. They checked recalls on the truck, and while there were three recalls, none of them had anything to do with the engine compartment.

I bought a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel 2014 last January. The engine caught fire while i was pulling a RV on the I95. By the time we put out the fire too much damage was done and the truck was scrapped by the Insurance. The fire started at the rear top of the engine on passenger side and quickly spread to the driver side. We have no clue as to what caused that.

We have a '08 Dodge Ram that caught fire while turned off. It was caught on video and shows the fire starting from the alternator. Dodge denies responsibility. Gotten experts involved who verify the cause was from the alternator. They have also told us they are unaware of any other vehicles where a fire can start when the car is turned off... Very interesting to read this where so many owners have similar problems over the last two years...

We also have video and shared it on the Dodge website. Hopefully we can get everyone's documentation together along with police, fire and insurance reports regarding this NON issue according to DODGE RAM.

I suspect that I found out the cause of the fire in my RAM ecodiesel 2014 last February 7 in Manning SC. It was leaking diesel fuel from an improper installation of the Intake Manifold. When I left home, I had noticed a red liquid (i tought that it was antifreeze) leaking from the area of the Intake Manifold. I had it checked at a garage and the mecanic reported that it was Soap left over from the washing of the engine that they had done a week before when I purchased the truck. I was suspicious because the entire side of the motor including the front right suspension was soaked with that liquid. I think that it was not soap neither antifreeze but diesel fuel leaking from a failiing joint somewhere. I did 1000 miles in cold weather without problems. When I got to South of the Border the temperature was in the 70. I can only assume that the fuel leaked on the manifold and it was hot enough to catch on fire.

250

@andrepatry - the trucks mentioned in this post for the most part were parked for hours. I'm assuming the only way a manifold could catch fire was if it was running or hot ? We may be putting a class action law suit together - I implore those on this thread to contact me asap: Email - Shopaholic8879@gmail.com

So my mom had a ?2015 dodge diesel that went up in flames back in December 2017. I think she had 150-175,000 miles on it. Since buying it, she's had the engine rebuilt plus other issues fixed. Brand new and has broken down many times! Her transmission started acting up so she had the truck towed to the dealer. Dealer ran tests and found that nothing was wrong but there were recalls out but they didn't have the parts to fix them. I'm the mean time she was told it's ok to drive. She drove it home a few miles to her house and it sat a few hours. A family member stopped by to tell her the truck was up in flames! Lost everything in it! Tools, towing gear, etc. Fire dept claimed they could not confirm or deny if the fire was mechanical or intentional. Ins company has denied the claim to fix it stating it is her fault. Her truck is her career as she hauls trailers, etc for work. It's her only means of transportation and now she's having to find local jobs with no vehicle because insurance and dodge are making sure they are not responsible. She has been in talks with a lawyer but being a small town, the lawyers are telling her it's a waste! I hope someone can get a lawsuit or something in the works! These vehicles are too dang expensive to let these jokers not be responsible!

My 2012 dodge ram 1500 2WD Express truck caught on fire on me as well on Wednesday March 21, 2018 @ 9:00 am going to the market for no apparent reason. The front center steering wheel started smoking up on me and led to the engine electrical harness wires on fire throughout my cab and engine. I need to get an attorney. I contacted the NTSB and Consumer Affairs.

Yesterday at 3:45 I got into my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4W SLT QUAD, hadn’t driven it in about 2 weeks, full of gas, fishing equipment, lawn chairs. It was a little damp, drove down down my driveway, slightly downhill, heard a pop the truck kind of lurched and the engine died. I put it in park. There was smoke rolling out from under the hood. My dog and I jumped out and I looked under the front wheel well the engine was on fire. I tried to put it out with an extinguisher but it was completely engulfed winthin a matter of minutes. I live in the country and by the time the fire truck got there it was too late.

My husbands 2010 Dodge 1500 caught fire yesterday afternoon, luckily I put it out before it got too bad. Not sure what happened he said he smelled a real strong gas odor coming down road and when he got home shut it off and went back outside it was smoking....

My husband’s 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 broke down while he wa driving. He pulled onto side street and parked on street. Left truck there for a few days then had it towed back to our house. It sat in our driveway for at least a week then he had it towed to local repair shop. The day it was towed to shop an employee at repair shop noticed it was smoking under hood. A few days later my husband called to check in...they said it is going to take a while to investigate what happened but there was definitely a fire! Will you still be pursuing a class action suit...we are interested. Not looking to get rich but would like Dodge to own responsibility for such a widespread and dangerous issue...and cover value of truck. Has this happened to any attorneys?! Maybe you can get us started!

Happened 2 weeks ago. 2012 ram 2500 Cummins Took it of the road 2 weeks prior so I could replace the front hubs. Unexplained the people who called 911 stated that the lights were on and smoke was coming from drivers side engine compartment.

Sadcumminsman — was it raining or did water get in there recently? See pics abouve from a few months ago - ours went up in flames during a wind:/rain storm. There had been a snow storm a week prior and my husband was driving through drifts so he thinks it’s possible he loosened something electrical under the hood and then with the wind and rain / it ignited. Drivers side, truck had been on since the morning.

My 2003 Ram 1500 5.7L caught fire a couple of days ago. My wife took it to the doctor with my son, parked it, and my son told her that the truck was smoking when they got out. Fire department got there in time to save it, but I cannot seem to find what caused it. The truck only has 68000 miles on it. Looking at the tunnel silencer insulation that was ripped out of the truck by the fire department, it appears like it was on the passenger side. I checked the crankshaft position sensor, but everything looks fine there. I was told that it was the aftermarket radio that I installed almost 10 years ago, so I pulled the dash apart looking for a burnt wire....no luck there either. I'm starting to think it was a wire or something on top of the transmission or possibly that a piece of the insulation was lying on the header and that caused the fire.

My 2006 dodge ram 1500 4.7L Out of nowhere went up in flames Sunday morning after sitting there since Friday a neighbor walking her dog said she heard a bang or a pop then a min or two later flames started shooting out of the engine compartment. Thanks to some passersby and my neighbor who was outside at the time saw the smoke and came to see what was going on and were able to contain the fire till the fire department arrived. The weather was rain on and off all weekend, fire department is thinking that maybe there was a short some were in the engine compartment, the truck has been well maintained and had no modifications done to it except a new head put in two years ago! Needless to say the truck ended up a total lose!

Last week while my wife was driving my 06 1500 4.7 she called me and said that the radio was cutting in and out and the wipers started going real slow. She said she lost power steering, coasted off the roadway and the truck would not turn over. Being that I was not home and she was only 1/2 mile from the house I told her to just have it towed home because it sounded like it was a quick fix (serpentine belt). The next morning I popped the hood and it was quite obvious that there was a fire. The air resonator box was melted on top of the alternator. After breaking all the melted plastic I was able to get to the alternator. From the attached picture I am 99.9% sure that the fire started in the area of the field wire connections. My next attempt will be to replace the alternator and burnt wires to find out "why?"

Had a no crank situation with my 08 Ram 1500 hemi. Upon checking, found that there had been a fire in the backside of the alternator that also burnt the pcv tube and burnt through the A/C suction line which put out the fire. Had the A/C line not burst and released the refrigerant all over the engine, the truck and boat shed full of boats would have been lost. No sign of trouble beforehand.

Our 2016 Ram 1500 Tradesman just caught on fire while driving it. Chrysler/Ram investigated and said it was no fault of theirs. The truck was one year old with 17,500 miles on it. Started under hood front left side. Was gone in 10 minutes. We had just had it completely checked, oil change, etc for a trip we were taking. Chrysler won't do a thing!

This is a Dodge Ram that went on fire in an airport parking lot 200 ft from the terminal entrance in NY , it totaled my car that was parked beside it, I have got the runaround from the insurance co, airport and state troopers. I know my car was not worth a lot but no one wants to pay for the damage to my car, the insurance co Progressive says it is a Dodge problem so they are not paying out for the truck or my car. The State troopers and the airport just want me to to forget it ever happened.

Our 2008 Durango caught on fire the 12/19/18. After reading all of these messages makes me wonder what happened. It had less than 81,000 miles and in excellent condition. I was working in Tennessee when I received the call. The engine compartment is heavily damaged basically a block of the engine. The interior was gone as well. I was told my wife had not been able to get out. When I arrived was told that the is undetermined at this time. Fumes from burning materials could (toxic) could overcome someone was a possibility. Still not clear. Her commute would have been 4-6 minutes from the last known place she was. We bought this in February with 69,000 miles, and I had looked up safety issues prior to purchase nothing was noted about this. Nothing was obstructing the door to get out. It has been a tragic experience.

My husband's 99 ram 1500 v8 was well maintained 180,000 miles on it. Heat nor a.c. was on. White smoke starting coming out the vents in the dash I heard two pops and then bam the entire dash on the passenger side blew up in my face and became engulfed In flames immediately. I bailed out of the truck at 40 mph grabbed the door and ran with it until he could get it stopped. The whole truck was a total loss and something kept exploding under the hood in the passenger side compartment. Fire department couldn't determine the cause bc it burned so hot and fast. The truck was about 200 ft from the fire department when it caught fire about 700 hundred from it was he was able to pull out of traffic safely and it was a total loss before they could start their engines. Once he stepped out of the truck it exploded. We had literally just dropped our kids off at school.

Our 2014 Ram 2500 diesel with 36,800 miles started on fire in February of 2017. It had been parked for 3 days without being started. It burned our shop down along with it. It was parked 30 ft away from the shop. We contacted Chrysler and they sent an investigator to investigate concluding nothing. 3 Forensic experts have looked at it and due to the fact it was completely destroyed they could not prove anything. $400,000 up in smoke. We are looking to file a class action suit. Anyone wanting to jump on board please email us. We have hired a lawyer. PLEASE email us any and all info bobvic@midrivers.com

My 99 Dodge 1500 4x4 went up in flames today. Gave no warning. Hadn't driven it in days. Drove it to the gas station to fill it up and when I got there the hood started smoking and started flaming. Entire engine gone in minutes.

Amazing........and yet NO RESPONSE FROM CHRYSLER/DODGE. Sent out cards about air bag recalls yet ignores any questions regarding these unexplained fires.

Has anyone determined what the initial piping sound is? I drove my 2001 Dakota to Walmart less than 1 mile from my home. It was a lightly rainy day not much but enough for wheel splash. Inside Walmart for 45 min. Come outside, get in my truck, turn the key over, it cranks 2 times and then “POP” as they say. Just one. I have a “ram air intake hood, so I saw the small explosion from the driver seat. I got out someone in front of Walmart yells “get away it’s on fire!” I run in, grab an extinguisher and get back the fire is minimal 8-10inch of flame just behind the engine block just above the transmission bell housing. I thought rocker arm just blew thru the valve cover but no. Crankshaft position sensor looks just fine. Like some of the other posts, I smelled gas for several days before but couldn’t pinpoint it. (No heavy gas pools or drips) I have an extreme exhaust manifold leak so I just filed it away as that. The explosion was on the passenger side of the engine. Will post pics tomorrow. If anyone has any info on the popping sound please let me know. This is my daily driver and need it for work.

60

I heard a pop before mine burned up. You'd think it has to be fuel related. Maybe the pop is coming from the fuel injection. It's under pressure and the pop is it losing pressure and leaking fuel. Fuel gets around the fuse block and battery. You get a spark and it catches fire. Would also explain why some are catching fire while sitting parked and not driven for some time. Since this happened to me I've talked to several people who've had their Dodge burn up as well. Definitely something going on here that Dodge doesn't want to take responsibility of. Had to catch up with them at some point. Johnson and Johnson didn't own up to the talc powder issue for a long time but it finally caught up with them.

I own a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 that I bought brand new in Jan/2006 and only has 116,000 miles on it and is well maintained. Last week the check gauge light came on and I looked on the panel and saw that charging gauge was below "0". I pulled over and shut off the truck & restarted it and the gauge jumped up a little bit so I put it in drive and drove on. In about not even 1/2 mile down the road same thing happened. I just drove on to work. But at work I was worried that something was amiss with the alternator (b cuz I have a big brand ass new battery in) so I left work and drove to my mech shop. When he opened the hood we were amazed at what we saw............the alternator had melted the air cover on the top of the engine and not only that....it melted a hole in the hose to my AC and some wiring. I can not believe the damage to my truck. My mech could not find a used air cover that is on top of the engine anywhere at any junk yard in the 5 state area. Got us thinking, must be something going on with that. Had to order it special and it takes 4 days to get it so he taped the old one up for me so I could at least get back and forth to work. I see by the all the other complaints that I was rather lucky it didn't start on fire. What could the cause of this be? Anyone?

my 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 caught fire in the fuse box, coming home I noticed white smoke coming out of the engine compartment I stopped the car quickly and realized that the fuse box started to burn out I managed to put it out before the fire caught in the rest of the car

I went on vacation last Tuesday 12/3 parked my 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD at the airport come back a week later to find that it had caught on fire about 15 minutes after I parked it. They are saying it was something in the dash, which is of no help

My fiancee’s truck burned out last night. Over in minutes . Police determined that it burned by itself. Arson was ruled out. It was 4 feet from the garage and hot enough to melt the siding. Good thing there wasn’t a wind.

My fiance's truck caught fire tonight. Looking at it, it looked like most of the fire was ON TOP of the hood instead of being primarily underneath the hood. Arson detective is coming tomorrow to look over the truck in the daylight to determine the cause. We also heard a "whoosh" noise coming from the truck. We checked to see if it was okay. It seemed fine. Within minutes the truck was up in flames
