The 2009 Suzuki SX4 Base sedan is a bare-essentials base trim, which means you don’t get a lot of frills, but you also get a $13,339 MSRP. The SX4 base shares an engine with all of the SX4 trims – a 2-liter inline four with 143 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque. But, unlike the other trims, the SX4 Base comes only with a five-speed manual transmission and no automatic transmission option. The steel wheels come with P195/65R15 tires and full covers, and it has body-color bumpers and door handles. The interior features a tilt steering wheel, 60/40 split fold-and-tumble rear seats, and a 12-volt outlet.

The 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover Base AWD is identical to the SX4 Crossover Base in all regards but a few. The most significant change is, obviously, the addition of Suzuki’s three-mode intelligent all-wheel-drive system. This system allows the driver to choose where power is distributed among the wheels – two-wheel drive for efficiency, all-wheel drive for wet conditions, and four-wheel-drive for maximum traction in snow and ice. The system adds a little to the pricetag and detracts 1 mile per gallon from the highway mileage estimates (21 city/28 highway mpg for the SX4 Crossover Base AWD). And, unlike the SX4 Crossover Base, the AWD version does not come with the SuzukiTRIP Navi system.

Let’s start with the one thing the 2009 Suzuki SX4 Sport Touring sedan doesn't have that all of the other SX4 trims do – an available five-speed manual transmission. The four-speed electronically controlled transmission is the only one that comes with the SX4 Sport Touring. Other than that, the SX4 Sport Touring gets all the features of the less-expensive trims (including Bluetooth, the SuzukiTRIP Navi System and MSN Suite features, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, KYB performance-tuned shocks with a 10-millimeter lower ride height, and four-wheel disc brakes) and then some. The upgrades include air conditioning with auto climate control, heated exterior mirrors, the SmartPass keyless entry and start system, and a nine-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3 and WMA playback ability and a subwoofer.

At the top of the SX4 Crossover line is the 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover Touring AWD. It shares an engine and transmission options (a five-speed manual is standard, and a four-speed electronically controlled automatic is optional) with the SX4 Crossover Base and includes many of the features of less-expensive trims – the SuzukiTRIP Navi System with MSN Direct features, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls, cruise control, body-color bumpers and door handles, and a rear wiper. And it adds much more.

Exterior upgrades include silver roof rails, foglamps, a rear spoiler, and heated mirrors. The interior additions are the SmartPass keyless entry and remote starter system and a nine-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3 and WMA playback ability. This trim also gets Suzuki’s three-mode intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which allows the driver to allocate the vehicle’s power to suit road conditions.
