By now, the Matrix is everywhere. But what is the Toyota Matrix? The unique body design makes it a difficult vehicle to categorize. The Matrix is technically hatchback, although it bares many similarities to a minivan with respect to shape. Toyota Designed the Matrix to offer a combination of the driving ease of a compact car with the interior room of a small crossover SUV. The Matrix is built up from the same platform as Corolla, but its tall body stretches nearly a foot above its compact counterpart. The interior is also also reconfigurable for extra cargo, thanks to convenient flat-folding rear and front passenger seats.
There are four Matrix variations available for 2007. The two trim levels, base and XR, are both available with a four speed automatic or five speed manual transmission. All models are powered by the same 1.8 liter four cylinder engine, which provides 126 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. Along with a clever design and convenient adjustability features, the Matrix is marked by excellent fuel economy. The EPA is 29/34 mpg for the automatic and 30/36 for the manual.
All Matrix models can be built up with convenience and luxury options, but the higher priced XR offers a few additional aesthetic and performance-reltaed add-ons. Air conditioning and a CD audio system are standard, and options include larger wheels, a moon roof, and a JBL audio upgrade with a CD changer.
