What’s New for the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen rolled out an all-new Tiguan in 2025, and while nothing has changed on the outside this year, the manufacturer expanded the model range for 2026 with the addition of a top-of-the-line SEL R-Line Turbo trim level. This new variant benefits from a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine, standard all-wheel drive (AWD), and more standard features than any other Tiguan model.
Design
The Tiguan lost its optional third row when it was redesigned in 2025 (which was too small to be particularly useful anyway), and some heft, but its exterior dimensions actually grew a little. From the outside, the 2026 Tiguan looks classy with sculpted flanks, arched rear haunches, and a broad grille. In S and SE trim levels, the 2026 VW Tiguan looks comparatively plain, but the SE R-Line Black and new-for-2026 SEL R-Line Turbo amp up the looks with fancier wheels and a front fascia that adds sporty air intakes on either side of the blacked-out grille.
Powertrain
The 2026 VW Tiguan comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 201 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, and AWD is available. The SEL R-Line Turbo gains a more powerful engine, though displacement remains the same. With 268 hp and standard AWD, the top-of-the-line Tiguan should be much quicker around town than less-expensive models. An eight-speed automatic transmission is used in all Tiguans. With its base engine and FWD, the 2026 Tiguan is estimated to return 26 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined. Adding AWD drops those figures to 22/32/25 mpg. With its more powerful engine, the Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo’s figures sit at 25/32/28 mpg with FWD or 22/29/25 mpg with AWD. Properly equipped, the 2026 Tiguan can tow up to 1,800 pounds, which is well below segment leaders that can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Interior
The Tiguan’s interior is modern and classy, with smart, quality materials. The Tiguan S model wears cloth upholstery with interesting patterns on the seats and door panels. The SE model offers three different leatherette color options and a 10-color ambient lighting package. The SE R-Line Black has its own unique interior trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the top SEL R-Line Turbo gets perforated leather upholstery in three hues and 30-color ambient lighting. The 2026 Tiguan offers 37.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seats in place or 73.4 when they're folded down. That’s behind the Hyundai Tucson (up to 80.3 cubic feet), the Honda CR-V (76.5 cubic feet), and the Kia Sportage (up to 74.1 cubic feet), but still above average for the segment.
Technology
A 12.9-inch infotainment screen comes standard in the 2026 Tiguan S, SE, and SE R-Line Black, while the Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo gets an exclusive 15-inch touchscreen. Both touchscreen infotainment systems use the same Digital Cockpit Pro software, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the lineup. Thankfully, a physical knob for audio control is also included. A 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro digital gauge cluster is standard on all 2026 Tiguan models. In addition, the SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line Turbo come standard with a head-up display that projects information on the windshield in front of the driver. A seven-speaker audio system is standard, and SEL R-Line Turbo models get a 700-watt Harman Kardon system with 12 speakers.
