The redesigned Maserati GranTurismo impresses with stunning beauty and lively performance.

This second-generation GranTurismo doesn't stray far from its predecessor in terms of styling. The long hood, large ovoid grille, and sporty nature remain in place, but there's just a bit more of a curvaceous theme from the bulging fenders. The differences are subtle, adding some muscle under those graceful curves. The wide stance is enhanced by thinner taillights and a grille that hovers just above the pavement, giving this coupe an appropriately athletic appearance.
As is the case with the first-generation, this new GranTurismo stands out from more common sports cars and exotics. It certainly gets more attention than the numerous Porsches, BMWs, and Mercedes-Benzes in Southern California, where we tested it. Parked next to the rarer McLarens and Lamborghinis, the Maserati looks sinuously sensuous compared to those extroverted over-the-top designs.
The interior has undergone a far more significant makeover, which was much needed as the previous GranTurismo was noticeably outdated before it was put on hiatus. The new dashboard is thoroughly modern, with a large panel of touchscreens in the center and a sharp digital instrument panel. When you open the door, you're greeted by the lovely scent of premium leather, and our car’s racy red upholstery and carbon-fiber trim further enhance the feeling that this is more special than some rivals. Every surface is covered with high-quality materials that make you realize why the GranTurismo is so expensive. The structure underneath also has a sturdy feel and we never heard any creaks from the cabin, even when on rougher roads.
Inside or out, the Maserati GranTurismo distinguishes itself from the rest of the pack with its drop-dead gorgeous looks that subtly exude sex appeal. It's one of those cars that get you to turn around for one last lingering gaze as you walk away.

The 2024 Maserati GranTurismo is available in three versions: Modena, Trofeo, and Folgore. The entry-level Modena powertrain is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, which is a detuned version of the same Nettuno engine in Maserati's MC20 supercar. It's good for 483 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. The Trofeo that we drove increases output to 542 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, and both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. All-wheel-drive (AWD) is also standard. The Trofeo also adds an electronic locking differential, lighter wheels, and added styling flourishes. The upcoming Maserati GranTurismo Folgore represents a big departure from the norm as it will have an all-electric drivetrain with a projected output of 818 hp.
In typical city driving, the GranTurismo is well-behaved and pleasant to drive. Acceleration is smooth and the transmission gets you into higher gears rather quickly, keeping the engine revs low and the cabin calm. Being in higher gears does make the GT feel a bit slow to respond when you want more power, as the transmission needs to downshift a few gears to get the engine revved back up. Because of this, we preferred to switch to manual mode, using the column-mounted shift paddles to give a similar level of responsiveness and driver engagement as a stick shift.
Selecting gears is accomplished by pushing a narrow row of buttons in the center of the dash. It's not as intuitive as a traditional lever and can be frustrating when making multi-point turns. Switching between drive and reverse requires you to double-check the desired gear has been activated because it will occasionally stay in drive. It's one of our biggest gripes with the GranTurismo, though we fully admit it's forgivable and easy to adapt to after some time.
When pushed to its performance limits, the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo should accelerate to 60 mph in just under 3.5 seconds on its way to its 199-mph top speed. That's plenty quick for nearly everyone, and the howl of the twin-turbo V6 is inspiring enough to make you crave it. From a standstill, there's an abundance of grip from all four wheels and the GT tracks straight with very little work needed from the driver.
The brakes instill confidence with stability and a well-weighted pedal. When slowing to a stop, we did notice some downshifts that caused some slight lurches and in the very last crawl to a stop, the brake pads feel a bit too grabby, resulting in inelegant abruptness.
On a fun curving mountain road, the GranTurismo precisely slices through each bend, but the suspension tends to be a little oversensitive to mid-corner bumps. This momentary loss of traction is alarming at first and switching to the stiffer Corsa drive mode exacerbates the problem. This nervousness degrades some cornering confidence, but it still hustles around the canyons quicker than most drivers will ever desire.
That's exactly what we expect from a grand touring coupe, balancing thrilling performance with long-distance comfort. You'll still feel nearly every imperfection in the road surface, but they're smoothed over well enough to keep from being harsh or intrusive. You get just enough of a soundtrack from the engine exhaust to keep your blood pumping, though we did notice a bit more road noise from the wide tires. Thankfully, the audio system easily masked it. Overall, the Maserati GranTurismo is an excellent sports coupe for a couple's getaway that takes the fun and scenic route.

As a sports coupe, the GranTurismo doesn't suggest practicality, but it still might surprise you. The front seats have a wraparound feel that feels perfect for spirited driving. The front roof pillar is on the thick side and can obstruct the driver's view through sharp left turns, but otherwise, outward visibility is very good. Most buttons are within easy reach, though having the climate control on a touchscreen does require you to take your eyes off the road.
Up front, there's barely enough space for your personal items, as you're limited to some small door pockets and cupholders, along with two shallow bins in the center console. This is fairly typical for cars in this class, though. There is a very convenient rubberized phone tray that keeps your device from sliding around and it also has a wireless charger built in.
The surprising part of the GranTurismo is just behind. There's much more backseat space than you'd expect, though we wouldn't go as far as to say they're spacious. An average-sized adult will fit, though legroom is cramped and their head will be exposed to the sun under the rear window. In a pinch, these seats will prove far more useful than the small shelves that some other coupes provide, and smaller passengers will likely find the accommodations adequate.
Behind the rear seats, the trunk can hold up to 11 cubic feet of cargo. It's wide enough to hold a full-sized golf bag, along with a few carry-on suitcases, too. For longer items, there's also a center pass-through between the rear seats. This is significantly better than most coupes in the class and it's further enhanced with a hands-free power trunk lid.

As far as technology goes, the GranTurismo is more than adequate, but not quite impressive. The digital instrument panel is configurable and the head-up display delivers all the pertinent driver information. The 12-inch infotainment touchscreen is within easy reach, with sharp graphics and reasonably quick responses. The on-screen menus are also easy to navigate and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both wireless, which pairs well with the wireless changing pad.
Other features include streaming audio with Tidal, Amazon Alexa integration, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Remote monitoring and control over some systems are also possible through a smartphone app. For the most part, the infotainment system works as it should. We only experienced one isolated glitch where Apple CarPlay lost some screen functions, but that issue sorted itself out after a restart.
Our test vehicle came equipped with the optional 19-speaker Sonus Faber premium audio system and we can attest that it's worth the additional $4,000. It delivers a powerful hit of bass and noticeable clarity in the higher registers. It's distracting to use via the touchscreen, but thankfully there are control buttons on the backside of the steering wheel.
Other infotainment systems such as Mercedes' MBUX come with more features and better voice controls, but for a sports coupe like the GranTurismo, its tech level seems appropriate. With fewer bells and whistles to distract, you can concentrate more on driving and the pleasure derived from it.

Most exotic sports cars and ultra-luxury manufacturers don't submit expensive models for crash testing, and the story is no different for the Maserati GranTurismo. Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted tests and we don't anticipate they will anytime soon.
Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking. Our GranTurismo tester came with the optional $4,500 ADAS Base package that adds adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, lane-keep assist, a surround-view camera system, and a driver attention monitor. Also available is the $8,300 ADAS Full package that includes the base features along with a traffic sign reader, an automated driving system that combines adaptive cruise with lane-keeping, and intersection collision assist.
The adaptive cruise control works well overall, though it does wait uncomfortably long before applying the brakes when traffic slows to a stop. Otherwise, all other systems functioned without any false alarms or glitches.

Prices for the entry-level Maserati GranTurismo Modena trim start at $175,995 (including a $1,995 destination fee). Out Trofeo test vehicle starts at $206,995 and with a sensible list of options, the as-tested price came to $227,615. It's a good bet that the all-electric Folgore will exceed $215,000.
With figures like these, the GranTurismo is significantly more expensive than most Porsche 911s, the BMW M8, and the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT. These grand tourers are all excellent to drive and deliver comparable levels of luxury, but they don't stand out from the crowd and lack the sense of occasion the Maserati has in abundance.
Closer to the GranTurismo's price, the Aston Martin DB12 is another sleek coupe with similar driving characteristics while the Bentley Continental GT favors cossetting luxury with an impeccable old-school interior. Of course, there are several choices in the Ferrari stable, but those will end up costing even more.
The numerous improvements made during the five-year hiatus certainly seemed to have paid off. This new Maserati GranTurismo is a significantly better car than its predecessor, yet it retains all of the unique beauty that has always made it more special than the typical sports coupe.
