The BMW X5 M combines the versatility and upscale appointments of a midsize luxury SUV with intense performance dynamics that seemingly defy the laws of physics. This artful blend is part of why BMW calls the X5 M a “sport activity vehicle”—and it lives up to the label.
Compared to the conventional X5, the X5 M has large vents and flared fenders, indicating the performance within. It comes equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that makes a potent 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. It routes power through an eight-speed automatic transmission to BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD) with an M differential that allows for enhanced handling.
The X5 M is also available with a Competition Package that raises output to 617 horsepower, allowing it to run from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 3.8 seconds, according to BMW. This potent drivetrain returns fuel economy of 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined.
Standard features include 21-inch wheels wrapped in performance tires, Merino leather upholstery, an Alcantara headliner, and carbon-fiber interior trim. The X5 M also features the Live Cockpit Professional system, which consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The latter can also be controlled by a dial in the center console and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2022 BMW X5 M starts at $105,900. The Competition Package and its 617-hp output command an additional $9,300. An Executive Package ($2,600) adds remote start, massaging front seats, front-and-rear heated seats, ventilated front seats, soft-close automatic doors, and heated-and-cooled front cupholders. For an additional $1,700, you can also add a host of enhanced driver assistance features.
The X5 M is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.
