Long known for value, Kia shows off its sporty side with the Stinger.
The Kia Stinger is an unlikely car. A brand long-known for value, Kia's decision to crank out a head-turning, low-slung, four-door sports car just felt out-of-character. But it's the out-of-left-field cars that make people become car enthusiasts, and hopefully, the Stinger’s performance, luxury, and potentially limited production run (more on that later) will help earn it a place at neighborhood car shows of the future.
For a buyer today, the Stinger is the absolute value performance/luxury car. It shares underpinnings with the Genesis G70 luxury sedan but sometimes feels more special than its upscale corporate cousin. Perhaps that's because you’re driving a BMW 3 Series rival for thousands less.
The Kia Stinger was introduced for the 2018 model year and remains largely unchanged through 2021, save for some additional features. Trims for the Stinger are GT-Line, GT, GT1, and GT2. Standard features on the Stinger include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless device charging, dual-zone climate control, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped, flat-bottomed sport steering wheel.
The GT1 trim has many of the same creature comforts as the base GT-Line, but adds LED accent lighting, an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, and the more powerful V6 powertrain.
The range-topping GT2 adds upgraded Nappa Leather upholstery, 16-way power-adjustable sport seats including Air Cell 4-way lumbar support, and a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. It also adds heated-and-ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, sport gauges, a head-up display, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. A heated steering wheel is optional on all three trims.
The 2021 Stinger comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It puts out 255 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The Stinger GT features a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6. It produces 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Both engines route power through an eight-speed automatic transmission to standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD). Looking ahead, the 2022 Stinger will receive a larger, more powerful base four-cylinder engine as well as a slight bump in output for the V6 engine.
Frankly, both engines are enough to move you. The four-cylinder is lively and full of pep, while the optional V6 makes this feel like a true performance sedan. When pressed, that V6 also emits a gnarly exhaust note.
More than just swift acceleration, the Stinger is a fantastic corner carver. Steering is weighted like that of a sports car, and turn-is precise. The Stinger features five drive mode settings, including Sport, Comfort, Eco, Smart, and Custom.
In addition to its more potent powertrain, the GT trim adds a variable exhaust system, launch control, Brembo performance brakes, a limited-slip differential. No matter which trim you select, the Stinger comes equipped with high-performance dampers to turn any commute into a more exciting drive.
Though it looks like a four-door sports car, the Stinger actually has the functionality of a hatchback. It features two rows of spacious seating, with plenty of legroom no matter where you sit. The front rows do have better headroom, and the coupe-like profile does force rear-seat occupants to lower their heads when getting in and out. Back up front, the sports car-like cockpit features a tall center console area with easy-to-locate controls.
That coupe/hatchback layout provides 23.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 40.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. And unlike a conventional sedan, the whole rear hatch raises, thus making it far easier to pack up for a long trip or load in larger items.
The Stinger comes standard with a 7-inch infotainment screen. Upgraded trims feature a larger 8-inch screen. Kia’s infotainment system is easy-to-use and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes Bluetooth connectivity, multiple USB ports, and wireless device charging. Not only are these features helpful in keeping you connected and fully charged, but the new screen gives the Stinger’s cabin a luxury presence.
The GT2 trim adds a 15-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo system and a helpful head-up display.
The most efficient version of the 2021 Kia Stinger is with a four-cylinder model with RWD. It returns an EPA-rated 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. With AWD, fuel economy for this engine is 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. The Kia Stinger GT V6 model returns 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined with both RWD and AWD.
The 2021 Kia Stinger has a base MSRP of $33,090. Adding AWD brings the price to $35,290. The GT trim starts at $39,590, and a range-topping GT2 AWD starts at $52,590. The Stinger is backed by Kia’s generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
For those prices, you could get an Audi A3 (or S3), or a Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. Both of those are subcompact luxury sedans with less interior space, as opposed to a more spacious midsize luxury car.
For most of this past year, we’ve heard that the Kia Stinger will be discontinued after the 2022 model year, but more recent reports suggest that the Stinger may stick around. It speaks to just how terrific the Stinger is that people are this emotionally invested in the car’s future.
For those who aren’t seduced by a luxury badge, the Stinger is the ultimate luxury sports sedan. It has the looks, the performance, and the features we would typically expect from a premium brand, but at thousands less. It also has the added advantage of a spacious interior with impressive cargo space for a car its size. Those are all great attributes, so the question is: Do you care about the badged, or about driving a terrific performance car with a hint of luxury?
