The 2018 Ford Focus Electric, a limited production version of the Focus, remains unchanged from the prior model year. The hatchback-only model is available in the following states: California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont at Ford EV Certified Dealers.
Starting at $29,120, Ford offers one trim, and optional features include front license plate bracket, rear armrest with storage, and leather-trimmed front bucket seats with driver-side 8-way power adjustability. With the optional 240-volt/30-amp home charging station, the Ford Focus Electric fully charges in 5.5 hours.
The Focus Electric has a 107-kilowatt electric motor 33.5-kilowatt hour liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery, and a 1-speed automatic transmission. A 120-volt charging cord is included, but the Focus Electric’s charge port is capable of handling , 240-volt and direct current charging connections as well. An illuminated status indicator shows the level of battery charge and helps to ensure the charging cord is properly connected.
Charge time can be 30 hours with a 120-volt source, but a direct current connection can bring the Focus Electric up 80 percent in 33 minutes. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 118 mpg city, 96 highway, and 107 combined. Driving range averages 115 miles per charge.
The Focus Electric seats five passengers and has all the flexibility of a hatchback.. Standard seating features eco-conscious cloth with a 6-way manual driver’s seat and 4-way manual passenger seat. Front seats are heated and rear seats split-fold 60/40.
With only 14.2-cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 33.2-cubic feet behind the first, the Focus Electric’s capacity pales in comparison to the gas-powered model. By sacrificing cargo space, however, buyers gain exceptional efficiency.
The standard 17-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels are unique to the Focus Electric. Also standard are four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, regenerative braking, torque vectoring control, and electronic brake assist.
Outside, a one-piece grille with black and chrome accents gives the Focus Electric a distinctive look. Heated side mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, , high intensity discharge (HID) headlights, LED signature lighting, and daytime running lights are all standard.
Inside, buyers find a manual tilt and telescoping steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel, front and rear 12-volt power outlets, ambient lighting, and leather-wrapped shift knob. Ford’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide helps drivers gauge full efficiency by showing how instantaneous energy use relates to overall energy consumption.
The Sync 3 infotainment system includes an 8-inch LCD touchscreen and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An HD Radio with a five-year complimentary subscription to SiriusXM Radio, SiriusXM Traffic, and Travel Link services keep drivers entertained and informed. Sound comes from a 9-speaker Sony audio system, and two smart-charging USB ports conserve battery power when needed to improve the vehicle’s overall driving range.
The 2018 Ford Focus Electric offers buyers a mix of style and value. The Focus Electric is a solid domestic option for both the environmental-minded and price conscious consumer.
