As a carryover from 2011, the 2012 Ford Fusion should easily maintain its standing as one of the darlings of the midsize family sedan segment. With a smorgasbord of available trims, options and a hybrid with some of the best fuel economy numbers around, the 2012 Ford Fusion should continue to provide competition for the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata.
The 2012 Ford Fusion will continue to offer a range of trims. The base S trim comes with a standard 2.5-liter Duratec inline 4-cylinder (I4). The front-wheel-drive S comes with a standard 6-speed manual transmission (although a 6-speed automatic is an option) with fuel economy estimates of 22 mpg city/32 highway (manual) and 23/33 (automatic). Using regular unleaded fuel, the S’s I4 calls up 175 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque.
The SE trim also includes the I4 engine, but can be upgraded with a 6-speed SelectShift automatic with a thumb shifter for 22/30 fuel economy. The SE is also available in a V6 version whose 3.0-liter Duratec FlexFuel engine can accommodate regular unleaded, E85 gasoline or a combination of the two. The FlexFuel V6 comes paired with the 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission and ups the power to 240 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque, with fuel economy of 20/28.
The SEL trim also comes in 2 versions: an I4 with a standard 6-speed automatic (or available SelectShift automatic) or the V6 FlexFuel 3.0-liter Duratec, which provides the 6-speed SelectShift automatic as a standard feature. The SEL V6, however, now includes the option to add all-wheel drive. Fuel economy drops slightly with AWD to 18/26.
The Sport trim represents the final, all-gasoline-powered trim option with a 3.5-liter Duratec V6, standard SelectShift automatic 6-speed transmission and optional AWD. The largest engine churns out 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. The FWD Sport, with a trim-specific sport-tuned suspension and hydraulic power assist steering, gets fuel economy of 18/27 with FWD and 17/24 with AWD.
The Fusion also offers one of the most impressive hybrids in the segment, with a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle I4 gasoline engine paired with a NiMH-powered electric motor, charged through regenerative braking. With a combined power of 191 horses, the FWD Fusion Hybrid really shines in its fuel economy, with 41/36 mpg. Its electronic continuously variable transmission acts like an automatic.
The 2011 Fusion has been frequently described as comfortable, quiet and spacious, with interior materials that are soft to the touch, elegant and attractive. Given its carryover status for 2012, there is no reason to expect this year’s Fusion to offer a different experience. The S, SE and Sport come with manual climate control, while the SEL and Hybrid offer a standard dual-zone automatic climate control system (optional for the Sport). All trims provide a standard tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and all but the Base's incorporate cruise and audio controls. Although sometimes critiqued for the number of buttons on the center stack, the gauges in the 2011 Fusion were noted as large and easy to read. The Hybrid also includes a Smart Gauge cluster with an Eco Guide, which adds two additional displays to either side of the speedometer, providing additional information about fuel economy and “green” driving practices. Other notable interior features include standard MyKey for all trims, which is designed to help moderate younger driver’s habits by allowing parents to set limits on speed and audio volume, as well as dropping the threshold for low-fuel warnings and sounding a Belt-Minder chime until the seatbelts are fastened. The SEL and Hybrid also incorporate a universal garage door opener in their lineups of standard equipment.
Entertainment in the 2012 Fusion begins in the S with a standard AM/FM stereo with a CD player, MP3 playback and 4 speakers. The other gasoline-powered trims come with 6 speakers, and the Hybrid adds a 6-CD changer. The SEL, Sport and Hybrid also have the option of upgrading to a 390-watt Sony Premium Sound audio system, which includes Dolby Surround Sound technology and Sony DSP processing, 12 speakers and a single-CD player. All trims but the S come with a 6-month trial subscription to Sirius XM satellite radio, and the SEL, Sport and Hybrid include standard Ford SYNC (an option for the SE), which integrates voice-activated phone and entertainment systems. In addition, HD radio and a navigation system with Sirius XM Traffic and Travel Link are available options for the SEL, Sport and Hybrid.
While all the 5-seat Fusion trims have been described as comfortable, with bolstered and supportive seats in the front, the rear seats offer slightly less padding and, as is typical in the segment, two adults, rather than three, would be more comfortable. All gasoline-powered trims also come with a standard 60/40 split-fold rear seat to increase the car's 16.5 cubic feet of trunk space. Unfortunately, the hybrid’s rear seat is fixed and can't do much to solve the problem of an already smaller trunk (11.8 cubic feet). The S's seats are cloth-covered, with 4-way manual adjustment for the driver’s seat and 2-way for the front passenger. The SE upgrades to 8-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat and a 2-way manual passenger seat, in addition to a power driver’s recline feature. The SEL adds heating and leather trim to seats (optional for the Sport and Hybrid), and the SEL, Sport and Hybrid all feature 10-way power driver’s seat adjustment and a 4-way power passenger seat, as well as power driver’s lumbar adjustment and passenger reclining. The Hybrid adds a twist with its eco-friendly cloth seats (made from 85% post-industrial polyester materials, according to Ford), while the Sport offers trim-specific leather and door trim inserts.
The 2012 Fusion remains customizable, with numerous options bundled into packages. Although not every package is available for every trim, upgrades can change the interior or exterior appearance of the Fusion, add a blind-spot information system, rear-view camera or rain-sensing wipers, as well as a navigation system and power moonroof, among other features.
Safety in the Fusion is fairly uniform across trims, with standard dual front airbags, front-seat side airbags and first- and second-row side curtain airbags (although the Hybrid adds a seventh airbag at the driver’s knee). In addition to the airbags, the Fusion comes with standard front and rear antilock disc brakes, AdvanceTrac traction control with electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring and the SOS post-crash alert system, which activates the horn and flashers after the airbags are deployed. A reverse sensing system is standard for the Hybrid, but optional in the SE, SEL and Sport. When slowly backing up, the reverse sensing system gives an audible alert for objects up to 6 feet behind the car.
Although the 2012 version has not yet been assessed by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2011 Fusion was tested by both. In the NHTSA’s crash tests, the FWD and AWD Fusion rated 3 out of 5 stars (4 for the driver and 3 for the passenger) in the front crash tests and a perfect 5 stars for the front-seat side crash (although only 3 stars for the rear). Rollover tests earned 4 stars for the FWD, with only a 10.5% chance of a rollover, while the AWD earned a perfect 5 (9.2% risk of a rollover). The IIHS selected the 2011 Ford Fusion as one of its Top Safety Picks, awarding the sedan its top Good rating for all its tests (front, side, rollover and rear).

I just bought this car and am very happy with it. It drives well, looks like a sports car and has plenty of bonuses like a pop out Ash tray, which I will figure out what to do with as a non-smoking person. It has a fantastic huge trunk, security alarm and complete manuals for everything from the tires to Sirius XM and something called Microsoft voice connect!? Ive driven this car about a thousand miles since I purchased it. The interior is nice but nothing fancy. Controls are easy to reach and use. The ride is a little firm and you feel the bumps but the tires this used vehicle came with are cheap, cheap, and cheap. When I need to replace them with something better, I think the ride will improve. The car still handles and drives very well even with the sorry tires. My model has the base, inline four-cylinder engine. Its noisy if moderately pushed and feels somewhat underpowered. Fords inline four from this generation did have a reputation for long life and reliability which are important to me. Ive driven a Fusion like this that had the V-6 engine, and it is definitely a better fit for the car. It has more power and less vibration and noise but at the expense of less fuel economy. For me fuel economy was a definite factor, so I was fine with the four-cylinder engine. My model is the SE version. If you want the best overall experience, I would try to find a SEL model. That step up usually has the V-6 engine and most of the time the leather interior. Most SEL models have the automatic climate control system where you just set you temperature and the system adjust fan speed and heating/cooling to maintain the temperature. The base and SE like mine with manual controls you have to adjust fan speed and temperature yourself to keep the temperature you like. Overall, it seems to be a solid economical car and it isnt plagued by some of the reliability issues the current generation Fusions that began in 2013 have. If you decide you want one, Id look for a 2010 to 2012 model with the SE or SEL package. That seemed to be the best of the crop for that generation of the Fusion.Apr 14, 2024

Good car if a/c wouldnt stop working all the time and I have a check engine light that come on and goes off every other week. It show an EVAP code witch goes away after a couple of days. It seems to happen a day or two after I get gas . And any other car has a gas cap this one doesnt or I would have thought it to be a gas cap air leak. Aug 20, 2023

This car is a blend of the last four sedans Ive owned: Ford Taurus, Mazda6 (two of them), Saab 9-3, and Hyundai Sonata.
Its nimble, quick, and fuel-efficient with the added benefit of domestic production. The interior is comfortable and well-appointed in the SEL trim with the Moon and Tune package featuring, Sony/MS surround system, sun/moon roof, fogs, rear spoiler etc.Jun 08, 2023

I think the Fusion is one of the best cars Ford has put out there in a long time. I am speaking only of the older era versions. The very best were 2009/10/11 and 2012s. That 3.0 duratec 24 valve V6 is bulletproof. The 2.5, 4 cylinder is also a tough motor. I recommend the front wheel drive only. The AWD vehicles had problems with the TPU, that is the unit that transfers power to the rear wheels. Ford never put a drain plug in the unit as they believed it wasnt necessary to change the fluid. Wrong, bad idea. The Fusion Sport model offered the 3.5 V6 duratec engine. Very quick car. Lots of amenities. I think after 2012 the Fusion started going down hill some. If you can find a 2010, 11, 12, front wheel drive, SEL model has all the amenities. , buy it. The car is good for 300K plus miles all day long. Just change the oil when you are supposed to. It handles much more sportier than the full sized Taurus. I also endorse the Taurus to a point. Anyway, I have owned 3 of the Fusions wish I could get another. I drove this car from 2016 to 2018 when I retired. I was given the car as they had given me a gold watch a few years before. The car has been nice except for two things and I believe they are related.
The USB port fails and the Air Conditioner fails at the same time. Since I do not know the car well enough, Ive done a lot of research and found out that the USB port failure is a common occurrence. Where as the Air Conditioner failing, Ive had two quotes. $1500 to $4200. The larger for the Ford parts. The Air quits working as the actuator arm doesnt close or open the proper door correctly.
On the USB port beneath the dash. I pulled out the Cigarette Lighter and in its place I put a 4 port USB hub with a volt meter. It shows my battery level until it blanks out, which I am told the apim module. If it is its two small to operate anything. Because the voltage on that circuit drops to 0.0v immediately when I crank the car. Sometimes it stays on until I get to work 39 miles. If I dont plug anything into it. I plug in the Crash Cam and it dies. I plug in any phone and it dies. I am waiting for the dash to catch fire! Ford you could do better. This is a 2012 - 2020 problem!Jul 04, 2022

I bought the car at 32k miles. It worked great up until about 60k miles when the AC stopped working. Now at 115k miles it is very unreliable as far as the electric wiring goes. Overall, I am not satisfied with this car for the price I paid.Feb 22, 2022

I have the SE with the Moon and Tune. I like the standard 5 split 17 rims over the Sels and Sports rims. Fords SYNC, even the basic, works well. I have hands free Bluetooth conversations for an hour or 2 while driving, and the voice is great too. Streaming music from your phone, my car rocks and you will hear it if your within a block. I have the 2.5L I4 decent mpg, decent power, and great handling. The maintenance: oil changes, brakes, coolant, plugs, are very easy and quick. Handles good in the Minnesota winter. I upgraded to this over a 2003 Taurus, and would recommend over a Malibu, LaCrosse, Stratus, Versa Note, and even a new Buick Encore gx.Aug 06, 2021

It drove so nice! Really smooth ride. Only two negatives - I don’t like the design of the interior door handles. I saw two other fusions that had a broken interior door handle, and can see how easy that must be to break. Also, it’s kind of hard to see out the back window - not terrible, but enough that it concerned ,e enough not to buy the car for a teenager without a lot of driving experience. The price and the red liquid spots on back seats made the low price noticeable.

My first impression when looking at it is a some what aggressive but conservative. It looks like a big car and it is for a midsize car. The materials in the interior are nice all around. I would prefer leather but the cloth seats are good. They are comfortable seats, i never get fatigued on my commutes and plenty of room for a six foot guy to stretch out. I think someone taller would have no problem either. Road noise is a minimum and the suspension smooths out the road nicely. The engine has a nice aggressive V6 sound when accelerating hard. Every day driving the engine is smooth and quiet. I feel the car has a little to much roll and dives easy when braking hard. What surprised me the most on this car is the gas mileage for such a big car and being a V6. The most I recorded is 32 mpg, but I usually average 29-30 mpg. I would highly recommend this car to someone that wants a great car for commuting and still big enough to haul family around. Jul 16, 2014

2012 ford fusion ice cold air that turns hot
i have a 2012 ford fusion with 79000 miles. never had an issue with the car aside from stereo occasionally flips out. today when leaving a parking lot my A/C flipped from ice cold to boiling hot. now mind you the air conditioner did not stop working as that would have produced outside temp air blowing from vents. this thing switched temp from max cold to as hot as it could get. knob still on cold, max ac recirc and ac buttons all still pushed. turned car off back on poof ice cold ac for about 3 minutes. you can literally hear it switch from ac to heat. once again the air conditioner DOES NOT STOP WORKING!! it just switches from cold to hot on its own. i do not have automatic climate control i have all manual knobs and push buttons. while driving, sitting or anything in between the car switches temps. while driving down the road, i can super fast blip the key off/on long enough to make the computer to freak out and tell me the traction control doesnt work (it does) and also "check breaking system" ( also nothing wrong with it, just a result of the key blip). doing that will return ac to cold for a few minutes. in the course of the 4 mile trip home i blipped the key 20 times? give or take. each flip of the key returned the ac to cold for around 30 seconds to 4 minutes. if anyone has a clue whats going on that would be awesome!! please help so i dont have to set it on fire and drive it over a cliff!!

Ford Fusion has oil in spark plugs and coil
2012 Ford Fusion sale 4 cylinder. It would not start. It was making a clicking noise. Tried to jump it. Would not start. Took battery to charge it. It was dead. Got a new on put it in. It started but the RPM needle kept jumping. Got it steady. Then we took it for a drive. It dies when we r stopped at a light or stop sign. Starts right back up. Acts like not getting power. Checked terminals they were corroded. Cleaned them and it still done it. Bought new terminals. Still does it. Checked coil and spark plugs they are full of oil. What is going on? Please help.
