2004 Lexus LX Preview summaryImage

Luxury enhancements continued in 2004 for the Lexus SUV flagship, the LX 470. A rear backup camera system and new Bluetooth wireless technology were the notable additions. In 2004, more LX 470s were also equipped with the recently added night vision system, which utilized a reflecting infrared beam to illuminate distant images. This technology provided a visibility range four times greater than the low beam headlights.

The LX 470 was laden with other technologies to optimize ride quality. The Variable Gear Ratio Steering system had a dual role. It enabled additional nimbleness at low speeds, which could provide more responsive steering on trails. The system also is able vary the steering ratio for more stable highway cruising. The variable suspension provided a multitude of options for ride feel, whether bumping down trails or speeding down an interstate. The same power plant returned in 2004: a 4.7 liter V-8, making 235 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

A common nag for drivers was the LX 470's lack of power. Many felt that the 235 horses were not enough to propel the large SUV in the ways one might expect from a Lexus. Merging and passing on tight freeways seemed to produce frequent frustration. However, very few drivers gave any criticism to the LX with respect to ride quality or interior comfort. Forgiving suspension and comfortable seating were frequently listed as the vehicle's best features.

We enjoyed this car for the 8 years we have had it. It is very versitile in that the rear seats can be removed. As kids went off to college, we removed them and had more cargo space. We also have a Thule storage rack that goes on top of the car that we can include.Jul 12, 2012
