The Toyota Corolla got a redesign for 1998. The new Corolla was bigger and while the styling was still very conservative, the lines of the car were more graceful and modern. New options like side airbags and a CD player were offered.
The 1998 Corolla got a new, aluminum 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, rating at 120-horsepower--the most ever for a Corolla. Fuel economy was noticeably improved, with the 1998 Corolla coming in at 31-38 mpg. The standard level was renamed the VE, and the LE was brought back. The mid-level CE rounded out the trims.
Drivers of the 1998 Corolla are enthusiastic about its more powerful engine, and increased fuel efficiency, and of course they appreciate the Toyota reputation for dependability. However, some still find the car too small in the back, and others complain about the dull look of the car and the lack of available options compared to other models.

Definitely reliable & cheap parts
310,000 miles.. had to replace the alternator & radiator myself but other than that she’s still running lol just make sure to check the oil regularly since it consumes it.Jul 22, 2024

My sister handed down her car when she went off to college and, besides the basic
maintenance every car needs, this car hasn't needed a thing. A slight leak in the hydraulic power steering line is the only problem this 14 year old car has had. It
has run through many 'a tire but it's one of the funnest cars I've ever driven.May 14, 2012

Great catch. Nothing kills these cars... Low maitenance. Great on gas and on overhead ... save on parts because you will not need them... Most components are new or newer, Breaks rotors tires battary ... Handling is responsive. No noises or sqweeksDec 08, 2010

Performance: Reasonably nippy for a 1.6, brakes good, handles good on lowered suspension and 17" alloys.
Build Quality: Very Good, even air con worked well.
Appearence: Sits well on big wheels and low suspension with subtle TRD bodykit.
Cost of Ownership: Cheap to run.

It handled well but had a bit of body roll, the acceleration was brisk, 0-60 in under 10 secs. Nothing went wrong in my 3-4 years I had it. Solid reliable transport with a bit of Zip if you pushed it! Feb 19, 2010

simple and stylish..has a simple interior and is spacious good performance in terms of speed and it has a stylish exterior.. can do a good distance with no repairs and not very expensive and is fun to go on long drives with it..Feb 09, 2010

Acceleration nice breaks make a very fun sound when applied. Solid body but colour wears out quickly. Interiors,exteriors are terrible, alot of dust due to off road driving. Gas consumption excellent and maintenace costs low. Manual, i love it.Dec 30, 2008

It runs great and has never given my any major problems, however it is not well put together as all the door handles except one are broken on the inside. It gets about 25 to 30mpg city and 35 to 40 highway. Doesn't have much get up and go. I would recommend this car to someone who doesn't like to spend a whole lot on gasOct 06, 2008

Owned this car for 10 years and nothing has broken. Performs well for a 10 yr old car. I plan to drive it another 5 to 10 years with basic maintenance. Very reliable car. I have heard from other reviewers that the paint is not that great. I would say not so much, my paint is still in very good condition. Jul 10, 2008

Toyota is a really great car actually, especially if you are going to buy a used one! They tend to have noisy heaters though, especially the older they get. And if your car is before 98 you will have a timing belt which needs to be changed around 150,000 km. 98 and up its a timing chain so those last forever.Jun 26, 2008

Crap all round... drum brakes at the back, drum brakes!!! Those were used in my mum's first
car.... No power at all, loaded with 5 people and you really have to rev that engine... which
didn't liked being revved...

Why Air Conditioner Air is not cold enough?
My car's air conditioner blows cold air, but not cold enough to keep me cool in 80+ degrees. If the temperature is at around 70 degrees, the max cold setting is good enough to keep us cool, but once it gets to around 80 degrees that's when it can't. What can the problem be? Can it be that the car needs a AC recharge?

Loosing speed
I have 98 corolla le. My cas check engine light comes ON i went to autozone they scan it and show me the code P0500.My car has problems, 1. Loosing normal speed. For example. I drove on highway my speed was 65 mph suddenly MY Speedometer went down not moving and same time i loose speed also i pressed on my gas but my car does not catch to the right speed 65mph i used to run it. Going couple of miles i feel some thing just boost me from my back and i catch my right speed that time my speedometer works correctly but check engine light not go away. This problem happens most when weather is hot and check engine light doesn't appear on winter season. P0500 code is speedsensor or poor electrical connection. Plz i need all of your good suggestions to get rid of it. One mechanic told me change speedometer, change sparkplugs and wire, change valve cover gasket tube seals. But i want acceptable and reasonable solutions i love my car but i am confused that other mechanics told me it may have air leaking, some one said exhaust manifold etc etc plz help me out of this problem.thanks

Where is the oil pressure sensor located
On the dashboard I get the low oil pressure light. When the engine is cold it does not show. When the temperature guage is in the middle it will come on and usually stay on until the engine is shut off. I bought oil pressure sensor to change and cannot locate where to install.
