1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Preview summaryImage

The Volkswagen Vanagon got a slight bump in power for 1984, which was a good thing, since previous models had been considered underpowered. The '84 Vanagon was powered by a 1.9-liter, water-cooled four-cylinder engine that generated 83 horsepower, up from 67 hp for the previous year. The engine featured a fuel-injection system called the Digi-Jet.

The rear-wheel-drive Vanagon was equipped with rack and pinion steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, and front and rear independent suspension, as well as a sliding side door and a liftgate at the rear.

Standard features also included reclining front bucket seats, a rear window defogger, three-speed windshield wipers, an electric windshield washer system, vinyl upholstery, and a four-speaker sound system. A Vanagon VL version added velour upholstery, folding arm rests for each seat, tinted glass, a rear window wiper/washer, and a premium sound system.

A Vanagon Camper was also available. It was equipped with a pop-up roof, a stove, kitchen cabinet and sink, a swivel table, and refrigerator. Air conditioning was available as an option.

Most drivers seemed to love their Vanagons, though some admitted it was a love/hate relationship. While drivers appreciated the vehicle's functionality, roominess, and handling, they also pointed out that it often needed frequent repairs, which could be expensive, and that parts were sometimes not readily available.

I loved camping in the Van. Great family memories. Fun to drive, fun to vacation with. It's a lifestyle. Westfalia enthusiasts befriend other Westy fans, and those wh have never seen one before, are amazed. I wish we could keep this van forever.Apr 07, 2012

I have owned many, many vw's and this is the best one I have owned by far. Build quality is good for a vw. They got a lot of plastic in em. This is not the van to have if you want to just get in it and drive. They always need work. I am a mechanic so it is no big deal.Feb 03, 2010

overall a good vehicle. i suggest you know a bit about car mechanics though, as repairs can be very costly. regular maintenance is really easy, similar to old aircooled vw's. the trick with these is knowing the FI system and KEEPING UP WITH REGULAR MAINTENANCE! be sure to flush the coolant regularly, head gaskets are the #1 major repair, and along with that... engine failure. had a bit over 130k on the clock when i traded it for my golf.Nov 24, 2008
