Hyundai SONATA vs. the Competition: Costs, Features, and Technology
Hyundai SONATA vs. the Competition: Costs, Features, and Technology
Anybody shopping for a midsize sedan in 2026 will likely narrow the field to three models: the Hyundai SONATA, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord.
At first glance, the three might appear quite similar. As you look through the options list, though, their differences begin to show. Toyota dropped the Camry's non-hybrid powertrain entirely, meaning buyers are restricted to just a hybrid with no other options. Honda offers both gas-only and hybrid powertrains. And Hyundai provides the broadest lineup, with a standard gas engine, a 290-horsepower turbo gas engine, and a hybrid for buyers prioritizing fuel economy.
The differences between these sedans go beyond powertrain choices, though. This guide lays out the numbers across pricing, warranty, reliability, safety, and running costs, so you can decide which sedan delivers the best long-term value for you.

The Price Gap That Starts on Day One
The SONATA offers the best starting price among the three cars. At $27,450 MSRP, it undercuts the gas-only Accord LX by $945 and the Camry LE by $2,150. That price gap compounds when you finance the vehicle with a loan. The SONATA's $2,150 price advantage over the Camry LE grows to approximately $2,270 by the time the loan is paid off, assuming 10% down, a 60-month loan, and a 6.5% APR.
The price advantage doesn't stop at the base model. These sedans' midrange models add features like bigger wheels and power-adjustable driver's seats, and the SONATA SEL Sport starts below a comparably equipped Honda Accord SE or Toyota Camry SE. Unlike the Accord, however, the SONATA and Camry offer all-wheel drive as an option. The SONATA SEL Sport equipped with all-wheel drive costs $30,650, which still rings up almost $500 less than the Camry's cheapest AWD option.
The SONATA N Line ($36,050 MSRP) has no equivalent in its rivals' lineups. Its turbocharged engine produces 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, easily surpassing the Camry's max of 232 combined horsepower and the gas Accord's 192. For buyers looking for a sporty ride, the SONATA N Line delivers.
For buyers focused on efficiency, all three sedans offer hybrid options. The SONATA Blue Hybrid starts below the Camry and Accord Hybrid at $29,200 MSRP, while matching the Camry's EPA-estimated 51 MPG combined rating and beating every Accord Hybrid for EPA-estimated fuel economy.
A Warranty That Outlasts the Loan
Hyundai offers the best warranty coverage of the three in the midsize sedan segment, bar none. The SONATA enjoys a 10-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty that outlasts the powertrain coverage on both the Camry and Accord by five years and 40,000 miles.
That gap could be the difference between a covered repair and a surprise bill. Someone driving 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year stays inside Hyundai's powertrain coverage well past when the Camry's and Accord's coverage has lapsed. If the transmission needs work at 70,000 miles, a qualifying repair is still covered on the SONATA. On a Camry or Accord, you're already 10,000 miles past the warranty coverage and paying out of pocket. That's protection Hyundai builds into the purchase price at no extra charge, while Camry or Accord buyers who want the same protection would need to consider costly extended warranty plans.
The SONATA's roadside assistance[4] also comes out ahead: five years, versus two years for Toyota and three years for Honda. Honda also caps its coverage at 36,000 miles, so a driver covering 20,000 miles a year exhausts it in under two years. The SONATA has no mileage cap.
Plus, its 4.6-out-of-5 owner-satisfaction rating on CarGurus suggests owners are happy with it long-term.

Estimated Five-Year Cost: Price, Fuel, Warranty
Looking at the costs that are actually knowable up front: purchase price, EPA-estimated fuel economy, and warranty. On those three alone, the SONATA SE comes out ahead of both rivals over five years. Here's how it breaks down:

Let's start with the closest comparison: two gas-powered sedans. Against the Accord LX, the SONATA SE costs less to buy, about the same to fuel, and comes with a decade of powertrain coverage built in rather than needing it to be added on. Over five years, that adds up to roughly $3,950 to $4,700 in savings.
The Camry seems like it should be a tougher comparison, since we're pitting a gas-only vehicle against a hybrid powertrain. You might expect the fuel-economy advantage to close the initial price gap, but it doesn't. The SONATA still comes out ahead by $2,500 to $3,250, because its lower price and included warranty outweigh what's saved at the pump.
And that's still comparing a gas-only SONATA to a hybrid Camry. Opt for the SONATA Blue Hybrid, which matches the Camry's 51 MPG combined, and the five-year gap widens even further, to $3,400 to $4,150 in the SONATA's favor.
Safety Credentials That Keep the Whole Family Protected
All three sedans earn positive safety ratings. The SONATA goes head-to-head with the Accord and Camry on both IIHS and NHTSA testing and even outperforms the Accord. The 2026 SONATA earns a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+[5] award with good ratings across crashworthiness categories, plus a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
Despite its lower starting price, its standard driver-assist suite matches the coverage of its rivals at the base level. Every trim comes standard with a suite of Hyundai SmartSense[6] safety features, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist[7], Lane Keeping Assist[8], Blind-Spot Collision Warning[9], and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist[10].

Well-Equipped Even at the Base Price
While a lower starting price usually comes at the expense of certain standard features, that's not the case here. The 2026 SONATA delivers a tech-forward cabin across the entire lineup, including features at the base level that the Accord or Camry don't match. Every trim includes a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and Bluelink+ connected services[18]. The Camry and Accord have smaller touchscreens at the base level, and their connected services suites require a paid subscription after an initial free period. Hyundai includes Bluelink+ for the original owner at no additional cost for the life of ownership.
The SONATA even offers class-exclusive technology in its highest trim with Remote Smart Parking Assist[19], a feature not found on either the Camry or Accord.

[5] To qualify for 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK+, vehicles need good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front and side tests as well as acceptable- or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. In addition, winners need standard front crash prevention systems that earn a good rating in the pedestrian test and an acceptable or good rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test. If optional front crash prevention systems are offered, they must also meet those criteria. www.iihs.org
[6] Hyundai SmartSense features are supplemental features and not substitutes for safe and attentive driving. Feature availability varies by trim. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[7] Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection (FCA-Ped) is intended to be a supplement to safe driving practices. The system is not designed to detect certain stationary objects such as trees or poles, and may not detect all vehicles or pedestrians under certain conditions. The system is a driver assistance system and is not a substitute for safe driving. The driver is responsible for being attentive and maintaining control of the vehicle, and should not wait for the system's alerts before braking as there may not be sufficient time to brake safely. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[8] Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) will not work under all circumstances. It operates above 40 mph and only when it is able to detect painted lane markings. It cannot function if the lane markings cannot be seen clearly. If the lines cannot be seen clearly due to poor road conditions, weather, or lighting conditions, it may not function. It also may not function on very rough roads, when walls, curbs or concrete barriers are close by, or if following another car too closely. Since it "sees" the lane markings using a camera in the upper windshield area, it is imperative this area be clear and free of blockage such as stickers, dirt, snow, tinting material, markings and labels. Lane Keeping Assist is not a substitute for safe driving practices, but is a supplemental assist only. The driver is responsible for always maintaining command and control of the vehicle and must keep hands on the wheel at all times. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[9] Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) assists the driver by warning of other cars in the blind spot region. It senses the rear side territory of the vehicle when it is traveling over 20 mph. There are limitations to the function, range, detection and clarity of the system. It will not detect all vehicles or objects in the blind spot. Its operation depends on the size, distance, angle and relative speed difference between your car and other cars. BCW may not operate if sensors are obscured in any way. Do not rely exclusively on BCW. BCW is a supplemental system and the driver must still be attentive and exercise caution when driving. It is the driver's responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and ensure it is clear before changing lanes or directions. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[10] Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) can alert the driver of a potential collision by providing an audible warning and/or applying braking. RCCA is active when the vehicle is in reverse and operating at low speeds. Never rely exclusively on RCCA. RCCA cannot prevent all collisions and may not provide alerts or braking in all conditions. Always look over your shoulder and use your mirrors to confirm rear clearance. There are limitations to the function, detection, range and clarity of the system. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[11] Driver Attention Warning (DAW) is only a warning to inform the driver of a potential lack of driver attention or drowsiness. It does not detect and provide an alert in every situation. It is the driver's responsibility to remain alert at all times. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[12] Smart Cruise Control (SCC) is not a collision avoidance or warning device. SCC is for highway use only and should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads. Driver remains responsible to slow or stop the vehicle to avoid a collision. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[13] Upon turning the engine off, Rear Occupant Alert will provide a visual alert on the instrument cluster. Rear Occupant Alert is not a substitute for driver attentiveness. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[14] Standard on all trims. When the vehicle is parked, Safe Exit Warning (SEW) can alert the driver when a vehicle is approaching from behind. SEW does not work in all situations and is not a substitute for driver or passenger attentiveness. Always be aware of your surroundings and attentive of approaching vehicles. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[15] Highway Driving Assist (HDA) is for highway use only and can help keep the vehicle centered in its lane while maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead only when the lane markings are clearly visible on the road and should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads. HDA will not work under all circumstances and will not prevent loss of control. Driver remains responsible to slow or stop the vehicle to avoid a collision. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[16] Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) assists driver in changing lanes by providing a live view of the blind spots on either side of the vehicle and an audible alert if another vehicle is detected. Turn signal must be activated and other system limitations apply. Do not rely exclusively on BVM. It is the driver's responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and ensure it is clear before changing lanes or directions. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[17] Surround View Monitor (SVM) is a parking support system. SVM cannot completely eliminate blind spots, may not detect every object and does not warn of moving objects. Always check surroundings before moving vehicle. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
[18] Bluelink+ is available to original purchasers and lessees of new 2023 IONIQ 6 and new 2024 or newer Bluelink-equipped Hyundai models. Not available on all models and trims. Bluelink+ requires an active Bluelink account subject to the Connected Services Terms and Conditions. Bluelink features vary by model and trim. Only use Bluelink features and corresponding devices when safe to do so. Cellular and GPS coverage is required. Fees apply for map and multimedia over-the-air (OTA) updates after an initial three-year period of complimentary updates. Three-year term starts from the new vehicle date of first use. Features, specifications, and fees are subject to change. Bluelink services rely on digital wireless telecommunications technology outside of Hyundai's control. Bluelink is dependent on 4G LTE cellular networks controlled and maintained by third-party wireless carriers. If and when these networks change and/or discontinue service, or the underlying technology required to support Bluelink becomes obsolete, then the connected services will not work and Hyundai will be forced to cancel impacted subscription services.
[19] Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) can remotely help park the vehicle. However, several factors can impact RSPA performance. RSPA may not function correctly if one or more of the parking sensors is damaged, dirty or covered or if weather conditions (heavy rain, snow or fog) interfere with sensor operation. Always inspect the parking area with your own eyes. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
