Customer summary
Overall, the Nissan Altima impresses drivers with its reliable performance, comfortable interiors, and commendable fuel economy. Owners appreciate the smooth ride, advanced safety features, and updated technology across various model years. However, some drivers have noted a desire for additional luxury details and experienced minor concerns about the CVT transmission's reliability. Despite these critiques, many feel the Altima offers great value for their money, making it a strong contender among midsize sedans.

| 2015 | $8,397 | $8,339 – $8,953 |

The Nissan Altima's current nationwide average price is $17,339, and its year-round low is $16,886.93. That gives you a useful snapshot of what this model is trading for right now across the years in the data. Recently, prices have come down for the 2024 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the Nissan Altima earns strong marks from owners across the model years in the data, and the all-generations owner rating is 4.47/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Altima for its comfortable ride, roomy cabin, and fuel economy. Across the reviews, you also see recurring appreciation for its easy-to-use technology and overall value for the money.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2015 models among the highest across all years.
The trade-offs show up most often in recent expert-tested years as fairly pedestrian performance, interior materials that feel cheap, and outdated technology.
30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Nissan Altima models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Altima as comfortable, efficient, and easy to live with, and expert reviews reinforce its practical, everyday character. Across the model years, the strongest themes are smooth driving manners, roomy interiors, and solid fuel economy.
- Owners rate the Nissan Altima between 3.83 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is worth weighing carefully on older examples, especially where mileage, maintenance history, and prior use can shape how well the car continues to age.
What should I look for when buying a used Nissan Altima?
Across all model years, at 74.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 88.1% |
| 2025 | 86.7% |
| 2024 | 86.1% |
| 2023 | 83.3% |
| 2022 | 78.9% |
| 2021 | 68% |
| 2020 | 61% |
| 2019 | 54.6% |
| 2018 | 50.7% |
| 2017 | 46.7% |
| 2016 | 47.1% |
| 2015 | 47.8% |
| 2014 | 49.5% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360
- Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The Altima AWD should get 28 mpg in combined driving, and our test car averaged 28.3 mpg on our mountainous Southern California testing loop. Without it, an Altima should get 31-32 mpg.
Which Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2025 Nissan Altima offers...
- S: The entry trim starts the lineup and gives you the Altima’s core comfort-and-value formula.
- SV: This trim adds a well-rounded step up for shoppers who want a balanced mix of everyday usability and features.
- SV Special Edition: This is the best-value trim, pairing black wheels and a rear spoiler with comfort and technology upgrades.
- SR: This trim adds 19-inch wheels, sport suspension, brake-induced torque vectoring, and sport-bolstered front seats for a more athletic setup.
- SL: This trim adds the most advanced infotainment and safety content, including the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, NissanConnect services, a navigation system, ProPilot Assist 1.0, a surround-view camera system, and active blind-spot monitoring.
What Nissan Altima do most buyers choose?
The Nissan Altima years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 9,732 | 33.5% |
| 2025 | 8,062 | 33.8% |
| 2023 | 7,609 | 33.7% |
| 2022 | 4,679 | 31.9% |
| 2026 | 4,239 | 32.5% |
| 2021 | 3,075 | 29.6% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right price, mileage, and equipment combination. They also sit close to the newest model years, so you often get a newer-feeling car with a broader selection of listings.
What is the Nissan Altima's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $21,313 | −11.37% |
| 2019 | $13,778 | −10.29% |
| 2024 | $20,383 | −9.71% |
| 2020 | $14,574 | −9.62% |
| 2022 | $18,097 | −9.54% |
| 2017 | $9,772 | −9.5% |
| 2018 | $10,640 | −8.53% |
| 2021 | $16,703 | −8.33% |
| 2014 | $7,666 | −8.2% |
| 2015 | $8,397 | −6.16% |
| 2016 | $9,515 | −4.06% |
| 2023 | $21,348 | +1.48% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. One model year is up slightly, but the broader pattern still points to meaningful savings across much of the lineup. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older years show smaller changes.
The 2023, 2016, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Powertrain/efficiency: Nissan equips every 2025 Altima with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, 188 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, 180 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm, and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT); with AWD, output drops to 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, and the AWD Altima should get 28 mpg in combined driving while a front-wheel-drive Altima should get 31-32 mpg.
- Tech: The 2025 Altima offers an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an available 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, NissanConnect services, a navigation system, and a conversational voice assistant.
- Safety: The latest model adds ProPilot Assist 1.0, a surround-view camera system, and active blind-spot monitoring.
- Starting price: Prices across the lineup range from $27,000 to $33,330, not including a destination charge of $1,140.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2027 inventory to mature.

Customers say
Overall, the Nissan Altima impresses drivers with its reliable performance, comfortable interiors, and commendable fuel economy. Owners appreciate the smooth ride, advanced safety features, and updated technology across various model years. However, some drivers have noted a desire for additional luxury details and experienced minor concerns about the CVT transmission's reliability. Despite these critiques, many feel the Altima offers great value for their money, making it a strong contender among midsize sedans.

Despite becoming a meme for its extensive role as a rental car and widespread availability on used car lots across the country, the Nissan Altima is a solid midsize sedan, and it brings a spacious interior, solid fuel economy, and a surprisingly robust list of standard tech and safety features. That said, the car competes in one of the toughest segments around, facing the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
What’s New for the 2024 Nissan Altima
Nissan made no major changes to the Altima for the 2024 model year, but will continue offering the car in a whopping eight trims: S FWD, SV FWD, SV AWD, SR FWD, SR AWD, SL FWD, SL AWD, and the top SR VC-Turbo FWD.
Design
The Altima’s styling has become sharper and more aggressive over the years, with some configurations bringing dark exterior trim and black wheels. Nissan’s large “V-Motion” grille covers nearly the entire front fascia, giving the car a striking look from head-on. Nissan also gave the Altima clean side styling with a blacked-out C-pillar for a unique floating roof look.
Powertrain
Nissan offers two powertrains for the 2024 Altima. The entry-level engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. The available turbocharged variable compression engine makes 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It can change its compression ratio based on the driver’s behavior to provide more power or better fuel economy. Both come paired with a disappointing continuously variable transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD), depending on the configuration.
Interior
The Altima’s interior is surprisingly spacious and cushy, and cabin material quality is surprisingly nice for the price point, even in lower trim levels. Nissan equips standard cloth upholstery, and higher trims add leather and niceties like heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
Technology
All Altimas come with a 7-inch touchscreen, USB ports, Bluetooth, and more. The big downside here is that the car requires stepping up to the optional 8- or 12.3-inch display to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger displays bring other upgrades, including SiriusXM radio, nicer stereo options, a Wi-Fi hotspot, additional USB ports, and more.
Safety
The 2024 Altima is too new to have received complete crash test results, but its predecessor earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2022. The car performed poorly in the IIHS's revised testing standards, which employs greater collision force to simulate today’s heavier electric vehicles (EVs) and SUVs. That has held it back from receiving a 2023 Top Safety Pick award, and the trend will likely continue, as the 2024 model has received no structural improvements over the previous model. Nissan equips standard safety tech that includes lane-departure warnings, blind spot-monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, and more.
Pricing
Nissan offers the Altima in a staggering number of configurations, starting with the S FWD, which starts at $25,630. The midrange SR AWD starts at $29,330, and pricing tops out in the mid-$30,000 range.
