Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist, along with intersection braking assist and forward-collision warning that can identify large animals, pedestrians, and cyclists.
- Infotainment: Volvo Car UX with an 11.2-inch touchscreen, Google built-in, Google Maps, Google Assistant, Google Gemini, Google Play, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA rating is 26 mpg in combined driving, but on a sunny 88-degree day, the XC60 T5 returned 24.7 mpg on our Southern California fuel-economy loop. On the extended mountainous vehicle evaluation route, we saw 21.7 mpg.
Which Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

- Plus: This trim adds more convenience and comfort equipment for shoppers who want a stronger value balance.
- Ultra: The best-value trim for many buyers, it adds the sumptuously outfitted cabin, plush Nappa leather, premium wood trim, classy metal speaker grilles, and available upgrades such as front seat massage and the Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
- Black Edition: This trim adds Onyx Black paint, 21-inch gloss black alloy wheels, a crystal gear shift knob by Orrefors, and black exterior and interior details for a more distinctive look.

- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $42,358. The Volvo XC60 offers a calm, upscale cabin with a premium Scandinavian character that makes it easy to live with every day.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generates 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, and the powertrain features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter/generator and regenerative braking.
- Tech: A larger, high-resolution 11.2-inch touchscreen display debuts for 2026, and Volvo Car UX provides Google built-in with Google Maps, Google Assistant, Google Gemini, and Google Play.
- Safety: The latest model adds intersection braking assist and forward-collision warning that identifies large animals, pedestrians, and cyclists.
- Starting price: Prices range from $51,095 to $62,195, including the $1,395 destination charge.

Great reliable, safe vehicle, we purchased two, one for each of our first time drivers, twin granddaughters. One was recently involved in an horrific accident, and she walked away with only one small scratch. The car however was a total loss. We replaced it with the same model, we believe in it’s safety record…

Why it stands out
The 2018 Volvo XC60 stands out as a thoroughly redesigned luxury crossover that trades on style, safety, and technology. After nearly ten years, it finally received an update for 2018, and the result is an all-new platform with a totally different look and feel. It also offers an optional plug-in hybrid drivetrain, giving buyers a more unusual powertrain choice than many rivals.
What makes the 2018 Volvo XC60 especially appealing is the way it combines distinctive Scandinavian styling cues with a semi-autonomous driving mode and an amazing sound system. Those strengths help give it a character that feels more individual than mainstream luxury crossovers. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the menus can be confusing, the price is high, and the hybrid performance is described as lackluster. Even so, it remains a compelling choice for buyers who want something a bit out of the ordinary.
