4.6 Overall rating
(15 reviews)This car is lots of fun, especially the Turbo versions. It may not look like much on paper, with an 8v 1.7 turbo only putting out 120 HP, however the engine is made by Porsche. If you chip it, it puts out about 170 HP, more then enough to be quick as it only weighs 1000 KG. Despite being light, it also does well as a GT. On long distances, it is comfortable and quite luxurious. The seats are excellent, when you are on a long drive, don't worry about an aching back or a wooden butt. The aerodynamics of this car along with it's weight make the fuel mileage very reasonable. Ofcourse not everything is perfect. Being made by Nedcar and some cheap 80's plastocs were used on the interior, there are some squeaks. Bear in mind though that the car is almost 23 years old now (youngtimer insurance ftw). The partypiece of this car is definitly it's funfactor. These cars are underrated, resulting in very low prices. They drive like a go kart, that also happens to be comfortable when you need it to be. If you play around in it, you WILL get a big, big grin on your face. The handling is fantastic, not so strange as it was designed by lotus. The acceleration is great, even on high speed and there is very little turbo lag. Also, these cars are becoming rare. Where if you drive a VW Golf, you may have a good car, about 30 million others do as well. Nobody will look at your car twice. They will at this, especially with it's love it or hate it design.
One of the first 480ES in the UK Having been made redundant from MGA Developments in 1993, and then setting up my own Design Consultancy. i had used my Austin Healey as my company car for the first summer months, but as winter drew in, i needed something a bit warmer as my step daughter complained about the lack of space in the rear of the Healey. I had first worked at Volvo Holland in 1985, at which time the 480 was already well into it's development, although i did get to add some details on the project (such as the grille under the bumper ... a homage to Ferrari) , i later penned the ideas for the convertble version, that only ever was a show car, never unfortunately making it into production. So when an early model appeared in the small ads, at a very reasonable price .... i had to chose it over some of the more mundane cars in my budget at that time. Unfortunately it was in white, and had had a very heavy life already .... so i coaxed it passed 100000 miles, with expensive servicing costs, and rust just starting to show through the matt paintwork, as the car was rarely washed. It had a cool coupe proportion and a very original 4 seater interior, and trip computer etc. But it was rather gutless and had to be really pushed to get even a modicome of pace out of the Renault 1721cc engine. I replaced when i bought my Escort Cosworth, selling it to the works 'handy man', an ex-squaddie, who then drove it to Bosnia, where he was taking up a post as a UN bomb disposal mine clearer. I never heard of him or the car ever again.
Mine has full hand printed leather interior (GT spec), electrical/digital dial pod, wacky cheese wedge style shape, pop up headlights, 15" GT spec alloys, great handling-i can throw this thing anywhere and come out the other side in one piece, nippy acceleration and fun to drive. Overall I hope I will always have my GT.
This car is quirky! Looks quirky too! It's a bit of a wallowy drive, but handles quite well, and can overtake in 5th! Insurance group is high, and parts can be a bit dear, but the best car I have ever owned! I don't know what it is about this car but I just feel like I'm "home" when I get in it.
Totally nice car designed by Jan Wilsgaard. Lots of electronic gear that have reached an age, where it needs replacement. Solid car - starts every morning and take me to and back from work. Needs a trim
