What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Jetta?

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: IQ.Drive
• Infotainment: an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity
• Fuel efficiency: The Jetta’s window sticker lists an EPA fuel economy rating of 33 mpg in combined driving. We averaged 31.8 mpg during testing in blistering late-summer heat. Notably, we achieved that result using the Sport driving mode the majority of the time. In Normal mode, the Jetta suffers a turbo lag problem, in which there’s a delay between pressing the accelerator pedal and the turbo building up enough boost to provide real thrust. Sport mode mostly resolves that, making the car more pleasurable to drive.

Which Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta offers these trims:

• S: The entry trim gets the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 8-inch digital instrumentation panel, Bluetooth, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Car-Net connected services, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Sport: This trim adds the lowered, sport-tuned suspension and keeps the same core tech features, making it the best-value choice for shoppers who want a more engaging drive.
• SE: This trim adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and a voice recognition system.
• SEL: This trim adds the 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro driver display, navigation, eight Beats Audio speakers, leather upholstery, ambient interior lighting, upgraded digital instrumentation, and additional comfort features.

What Volkswagen Jetta do most buyers choose?

The Volkswagen Jetta years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they offer a strong mix of newer features, broad availability, and enough supply to give you more choices when comparing prices and conditions. They also tend to attract shoppers who want recent-model value without moving all the way to a brand-new car.

What is the Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want more room to negotiate. The smallest changes are clustered near flat, while the larger drops show that several recent years have softened meaningfully.

The 2017 and 2023 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.

The 2017, 2023, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Volkswagen Jetta now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −9.06% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.02%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 38.4% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 38.6%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $19,907. The Volkswagen Jetta offers a roomy and comfortable interior, a big trunk, and German driving dynamics that give it a distinctive everyday character.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: One thing that hasn’t changed for 2025 is the Jetta’s turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces an unimpressive 158 horsepower but compensates with 184 pound-feet of sweet turbocharged torque at a low 1,750 rpm.
• Tech: With the 2025 Jetta, Volkswagen equips every trim level with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an 8-inch digital instrumentation panel.
• Safety: Volkswagen equips every 2025 Jetta with IQ.Drive, which is the name for its collection of driver assistance systems and safety features.

If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
