What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Jetta?

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: IQ.Drive
• Infotainment: an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an 8-inch digital instrumentation panel
• Fuel efficiency: The Jetta’s window sticker lists an EPA fuel economy rating of 33 mpg in combined driving. We averaged 31.8 mpg during testing in blistering late-summer heat. Notably, we achieved that result using the Sport driving mode the majority of the time. In Normal mode, the Jetta suffers a turbo lag problem, in which there’s a delay between pressing the accelerator pedal and the turbo building up enough boost to provide real thrust. Sport mode mostly resolves that, making the car more pleasurable to drive.

Which Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta offers these trims:

• S: The entry trim gets the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 8-inch digital instrumentation panel, Bluetooth, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Car-Net connected services, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the standard turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It suits you if you want the lowest-cost way into the refreshed Jetta.
• Sport: This trim adds the sport-tuned suspension and the same core tech and powertrain setup, making it the best-value choice if you want a more engaging drive without moving up the lineup.
• SE: This trim adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and voice recognition, along with the comfort and convenience upgrades that make daily use easier.
• SEL: This trim adds the 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro driver display, navigation, eight Beats Audio speakers, leather upholstery, ambient interior lighting, upgraded digital instrumentation, and additional comfort features for shoppers who want the most upscale Jetta experience.

What Volkswagen Jetta do most buyers choose?

The Volkswagen Jetta years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

Higher-volume years usually draw more shoppers because they offer a wider selection of listings and a stronger mix of prices and equipment. That makes it easier for you to compare condition, mileage, and deal quality before you buy.

What is the Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The table shows broad price declines across every listed model year, which is good news if you're shopping used. The steepest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while several older years are falling more gradually. That pattern can create attractive entry points if you want a newer Jetta at a lower price than before.

The 2023, 2014, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

For the safest used buy, the 2016 and 2017 models both post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used Volkswagen Jetta now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −10.22% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.28%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 38.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 37.9%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $18,878. The Volkswagen Jetta offers a roomy and comfortable interior, a big trunk, and German driving dynamics that make it feel more substantial than many compact sedans.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: One thing that hasn’t changed for 2025 is the Jetta’s turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces an unimpressive 158 horsepower but compensates with 184 pound-feet of sweet turbocharged torque at a low 1,750 rpm.
• Tech: With the 2025 Jetta, Volkswagen equips every trim level with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an 8-inch digital instrumentation panel.
• Safety: Volkswagen equips every 2025 Jetta with IQ.Drive, which is the name for its collection of driver assistance systems and safety features.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
