What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
Across all model years, at 69% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2019 | 78.4% |
| 2018 | 69% |
| 2017 | 66.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2019 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions of the Alltrack.
- Infotainment: Volkswagen’s Discover Media system includes smartphone projection, satellite radio and data services, Car-Net apps and subscription services, and a navigation system.
- Fuel efficiency: 24.8 mpg on my testing loop ... After a week of driving, my average had risen to 26 mpg. Given that the EPA says it will get 25 mpg in combined driving, this is an impressive result.
Which Volkswagen Golf Alltrack trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack offers...
- Alltrack S: The base model starts at $26,670 with a manual gearbox and gives you the core Alltrack formula with 4Motion AWD, hill-descent control, an Off-Road driving mode, and a 1.2-inch increase in ground clearance.
- Alltrack SE: This mid-grade trim adds a panoramic sunroof, a premium sound system, keyless entry with push-button engine starting, and automatic rain-sensing wipers. It also brings the optional 6-speed DSG automated manual transmission, making it the best-value choice if you want a richer feature set.
- Alltrack SEL: The top trim adds the most comprehensive infotainment system with navigation and Car-Net subscription services, power adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch aluminum wheels.
What Volkswagen Golf Alltrack do most buyers choose?
The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack years with the most listings are 2018, 2017, and 2019.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 261 | 32.2% |
| 2017 | 199 | 32.2% |
| 2019 | 102 | 28.4% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more shopping choice, which can make it easier to compare prices, trims, and condition. They also tend to be the years buyers return to most often when they want a balance of availability and value.
What is the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | $18,088 | −10.13% |
| 2017 | $13,495 | −5.35% |
Prices are moving down for both model years shown, which can create better opportunities for used buyers. The larger drop points to a sharper shift in value on one year, while the smaller decline suggests the other has softened more gradually. The 2017 and 2019 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack safe?
- 2017: 8/10
Volkswagen’s safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking across all versions of the Alltrack.
For the safest used buy, the 2017 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.

- Tech: It includes smartphone projection, satellite radio and data services, Car-Net apps and subscription services, and a navigation system.
- Safety: Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions of the Alltrack.
- Starting price: The Alltrack S is the base model and starts at $26,670 with a manual gearbox.
If you're buying used today, the 2018 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2020 inventory to mature.

For my purposes, the Golf Alltrack is a near perfect vehicle. It is not gross and large, yet its interior room is greater than many SUVs. The handling is responsive and sure. While there was no means of testing the Alltrack capabilities, I would assume that it would meet situations of snow with great aplomb. The acceleration and driving characteristics were excellent. Fit and finish both inside and out were equally superb. Unless you absolutely NEED an offroad vehicle (and exactly how often are you really going to use that offroad potential that you were seduced into buying?) I cannot imagine a better or more practical vehicle. The car is a good value. For those who want an automatic transmission, it is available. I would place the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack far ahead of the Subaru offerings in both handling, acceleration and fit and finish.

This is my second VW. I also own a 2016 Golf S w/sunroof, larger tires(Continental DWS6) and after market wheels. It is sometimes mistaken for a GTI. The Alltrack handles just as well and seems to hold a tighter line on expressway ramps. Have only had it 4 days and already exceeding gas-mileage that was expected (averaging 32MPG on back roads). Anticipate higher mileage on the highway when cruise is set. Only thing I miss is satellite radio. Should have been standard on all trims. Build quality is very high. Never considered anything else. Great value for the money. Already planning upgrades (sun shades, bumper skuff guard, LED headlight bulbs.) Expect this car to last far into my retirement.

Why it stands out
Think of the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack as a German Subaru Outback, but more fun to drive. That comparison captures its basic appeal: it takes the familiar wagon formula and adds all-wheel drive, SUV styling cues, and a slightly raised suspension to better handle a range of daily driving needs. The result is a car that stands out for buyers who want practicality without giving up a more engaging feel behind the wheel.
Its strengths are rooted in that simple recipe. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is presented as a tried-and-true approach rather than something radically new, and that familiarity is part of the charm. It should appeal to shoppers looking for a versatile wagon with a more adventurous look and the added confidence of all-wheel drive. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests the car’s handling and comfortable interior are major positives, while tire concerns and the absence of features such as blind spot detection may be drawbacks for some buyers.
