This car was fantastic when I first purchased it (new in 1988). I paid over $13,000 at the time which was bad enough, but the next year VW decided to drop the selling prices of the new models to $8,500. Overall the car was a champ, but I abused the heck out of it. It could easily attain the top speed on the odometer (120 mph) and did so once that I know of. The main drawback was that the tires were narrow and the car was very light, thus in the rain at speed the vehicle tended to brake long. It was wrecked once and suffered many ailments thereafter including a persistent incurable window leak.

I am the proud owner of a 1989 Volkswagen Fox GTS, That model comes with a 5-speed instead of a 4 speed transmission. The car has never left me stranded. The car is a 2 door and yes it is a 1.8L 4 cylinder with a factory 5 speed transmission, I have put a TT tuning 270 cam into it, a moddified Audi 200 Turbo intake manifold, Switched the CIS-E to Digifant fuel injection. The VW Fox wasnt the first fox. In North America and Australia, the 80 was sold as the Audi Fox for model years 1973–79. so a little history lesson.

I had in Edmonton I paid $250 for this 87 fox with 220,000kms it was badly rusted on the sides but the floors had no rust. This was not one of Volkswagens nicer models but the four speed standard was fun to drive, I drove the supreme hell of this vdub for 4 months and it never once let me down. I drove it to the scrap yard the day I flew home to Cape Breton from Edmonton.

Excellent beginners car. Easy to work on. Lovely body styling. Escellent gas milage. easy to upholster seating. You can find these cheap less than $1500.00 . Blast to drive. Wouldnt trade it in for anything. would do anything to own another 2 door fox for a play toy.

Overview
Produced by Volkswagen's Brazilian division, the Fox debuted in 1987 as a subcompact available in several different configurations, including an entry-level two-door coupe and a four-door sedan. A two-door Fox station wagon was also available for a few years before being discontinued after the 1990 model year.
As might be expected with a subcompact, power was minimal, provided of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that generated just 81 horsepower. That would continue to be the Fox's powerplant throughout its U.S. run.
Standard features were also limited. Bucket seats, power brakes, a rear window defroster, and a passive restraint system with motorized shoulder seat belts (lap belts were buckled manually) were among the few standard amenities offered during the Fox's run. Air conditioning was added as a standard feature for the vehicle's final year.
Despite its lackluster engine and lack of amenities, the Fox was considered to be a reliable, fuel-efficient, and durable vehicle, with a decent ride for the money and a quick engine that made for a fun ride.
