I love this car... And simply will NOT get rid of it. The 600cc 2-stroke is incredibly reliable, jobs that take days on other cars take minutes, you can replace the engine and transmission... in 45 minutes single handed). It's easy and Simpy to order an buy most parts too, with several companies in Germany selling good quality new or re-manufactured spares. The communist era was not a good time for anyone, but it produced some amazing things... and the genuinely humble little Trabant is the best of them. Performance is surprising. it beats Astons off at the Tesco Roundabout, and can hold it's own under normal road conditions. Be aware... The Trabant is not a fast car. but it is 'nimble' due to the very low body weight. The nice surprise is low fuel consumption and negligible running costs of the 600cc 2-stroke. Build quality... Is legendarily bad... But when you actually see a Trabant, you realise.. It's completely unimportant. How much fun is it to drive... Lots. Be prepared to wave, flash lights a lot, and be the centre of attention. Park it next to a Veyron... People look at the Bugatti and then the Trabant... Then, and only then, do they smile. Even people who hate Trabants... Love them in secret.

I love everything about my Trabant, it's fun, it's cheap as chips to run and maintain. I drive my Trabant every day, it's my main transport for cummuting, shopping, trips out and the school run. Looks... You have to like classics, and quirky classics at that. I've parked it next to an Aventador, and got MORE attention. The Duroplast bodywork can be hard work to maintain a decent finish on, but care and time pay off. Build quality... Aesthetically bad, but technically pretty good considering... If it was that bad, how's it lasted 30 years ? Answer... It was designed to be easy to build, and rebuild and rebuild again, and again... Build quality's not an issue with a Trabant. Believe me. Parts... Spares and replacements are available for most parts, although body panels and metal sections are getting scarce. There are several Trabi specialists in Germany, and UK owners can order directly from 'Trabi-UK' from whom I regularly get over night service and good quality parts. Performance... Actually, not that bad. It top's out at about 65mph, but then, running a 600cc 2-Stroke designed in the 50's, 65mph is pretty good. Fuel economy is fair, on a Scotland run (from London) it varied between 30 and 48mpg, on an engine that had not been overhauled since it was built in 1984. Don't expect drag-strip acceleration, but be prepared to win a few at the lights... The element of surprise is on your side.

The Trabant 601 was built 1964 til 1991 with just some minor engineering changes and almost no real facelift. My 83 Trabant 601 S De Luxe has a yellow painted roof and some chrome bumpers... Overall the 26HP two cylinder two stroke engine is not a racing engine, but with only 650kg of weight the 594ccm engine is pretty strong and in city traffic you can easily go with the modern cars. From 0 - 100 (0-60MPH) it takes....well, kind of forever...But after a long run you can reach 100km/h, even a bit more :-) Technically it is pretty similar to a classic Mustang or other historic car. Drum brakes, leaf springs, all is simple and easy to repair. Parts are still available in good amounts and not very expensive. Overall it is a real fun car :-)

Simple and Efficient! Easy to drive and have a low fuel consumption. It has a 2 cylinder 2 stroke engine, 595cc capable to deliver 19kW. Spare parts a little expensive but it worth the effort. Can broke when you expect less or it can work flawlessly...in other words ITS FUN TO DRIVE!!!
