Is the Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the Subaru Forester is a strong used-car pick if you want a practical SUV with broad owner approval and a long-running reputation for usefulness. The all-generations owner rating is 4.6/5 across every model year in the data.

Expert reviews rate the 2019 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs in recent expert reviews center on sluggish acceleration, a CVT that can feel slow, and infotainment systems that can seem dated or frustrating to use.
32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Subaru Forester models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the Forester for its reliability, roomy interior, and all-weather confidence. The model’s practical design, strong safety reputation, and comfortable ride also show up repeatedly across the data.
- Owners rate the Subaru Forester between 4.3 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk looks manageable overall, especially if you focus on well-kept examples with clean history reports and strong maintenance records.
What should I look for when buying a used Subaru Forester?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 80.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |

| 2016 | 63.5% |

Key things to evaluate:

- Infotainment: 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 26 mpg in combined driving
Which Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2026 Subaru Forester offers these trims:
- Base: the entry trim in the gas-only lineup, with the redesigned Forester’s core utility and safety focus.
- Premium: a step up for buyers who want more everyday comfort and convenience.
- Sport: adds a more expressive look and a sportier feel.
- Limited: brings a more upscale equipment mix for shoppers who want extra refinement.
- Wilderness: the best-value trim for buyers who want the most capability, with a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, extra body cladding, anodized copper accents, water-resistant artificial leather, all-weather floor mats, a rubber cargo mat, and the model’s most adventure-ready character.
- Touring: the most premium trim, with the highest-end comfort and convenience treatment.
What Subaru Forester do most buyers choose?
The Subaru Forester years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 6,024 | 33.5% |
| 2024 | 5,461 | 33.4% |
| 2023 | 4,736 | 33.5% |
| 2026 | 4,224 | 33.6% |
| 2022 | 3,988 | 33.4% |
| 2019 | 3,297 | 33.2% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they combine strong availability with recent-model features and pricing that still sits below brand-new inventory. That gives you more choices while keeping the Forester’s core practicality and all-wheel-drive appeal intact.
What is the Subaru Forester's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $24,135 | −8.39% |
| 2024 | $28,676 | −7.08% |
| 2025 | $31,063 | −6.63% |
| 2021 | $21,787 | −5.63% |
| 2019 | $18,663 | −4.95% |
| 2023 | $26,716 | −4.31% |
| 2018 | $16,036 | −4.29% |
| 2020 | $20,724 | −3.94% |
| 2014 | $9,636 | −3.4% |
| 2015 | $11,104 | −1.96% |
| 2016 | $12,596 | −1.77% |
| 2017 | $14,544 | −1.68% |
Most Forester model years are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want more room to negotiate. The declines are strongest on some newer years, while older years are changing more slowly, which suggests steadier pricing at the lower end of the lineup.
The 2017, 2016, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Subaru Forester now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −6.63% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.08%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.4%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $31,063. The Subaru Forester offers a roomy cabin, strong visibility, and the kind of practical all-weather character that makes it easy to live with every day.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: the latest Forester Wilderness uses a normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and Subaru says the CVT features eight programmed ratios.
- Tech: the latest Forester Wilderness pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel with an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and it includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: the latest Forester adds improved rear seatbelts and includes EyeSight, active blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Automatic Emergency Steering.
- Starting price: the gas-only 2026 Forester lineup starts at $31,445.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact SUV that leans hard into practicality, visibility, and all-weather confidence. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive is standard, and the Forester’s reputation for reliability and value remains a major part of its appeal. It also offers a spacious interior and a large cargo area, which makes it especially attractive to buyers who want an easy-to-live-with family vehicle rather than something flashy.
For 2024, the Forester’s strengths are rooted in its balanced setup: a 2.5-liter boxer engine with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft works with a CVT, while standard EyeSight safety tech adds adaptive cruise control, Pre-Collision Braking, lane departure and sway warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Higher trims bring more comfort and convenience, including an eight-inch touchscreen on upper versions, a panoramic power moonroof, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and available blind-spot and rear cross-traffic features. The Sport trim adds a more aggressive look with dark trim and orange accents, while the Limited and Touring trims bring more upscale touches such as leather upholstery, a power rear gate, ventilated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The CVT can feel sluggish, and the latest generation does not offer a turbocharged engine option. Even so, the 2024 Subaru Forester remains appealing because it combines standard AWD, strong visibility, useful space, and a long-running reputation for durability in a package that is easy to recommend for everyday use.
