The Subaru Forester's current nationwide average price is $22,648, and its lowest point over the past year was $20,281. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the Subaru Forester is a strong used-car choice if you want a practical SUV with broad owner appeal and a long-running reputation for everyday usefulness. The all-generations owner rating is 4.62/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Forester for its spacious interior, reliability, all-wheel-drive capability, safety features, and comfortable ride. Across the model’s history, it also stands out for visibility, practicality, and family-friendly usability.
Expert reviews rate the 2019 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in recent expert reviews are sluggish acceleration, a CVT that can feel slow, and infotainment systems that can seem dated or frustrating to use. Even so, the Forester’s mix of space, confidence in poor weather, and strong safety focus keeps it appealing for used buyers.
34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Subaru Forester models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Forester’s practicality, safety, and all-wheel-drive confidence as core strengths. Across the model line, it has built a reputation for dependable everyday use, with many drivers praising its comfort, visibility, and usefulness.
- Owners rate the Subaru Forester between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to condition, maintenance history, and mileage than to the model’s basic formula, so a well-kept example is the best path to a confident purchase.
What should I look for when buying a used Subaru Forester?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 96.8% |
| 2025 | 95.1% |
| 2024 | 91.1% |
| 2023 | 89.1% |
| 2022 | 86.5% |
| 2021 | 80.8% |
| 2020 | 78.3% |
| 2019 | 72.6% |
| 2018 | 67.7% |
| 2017 | 63.7% |
| 2016 | 63.8% |
| 2015 | 63.7% |
| 2014 | 64.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: EyeSight
- Infotainment: 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 26 mpg in combined driving, but we averaged 22.7 mpg during this evaluation.
Which Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2026 Subaru Forester offers these trims:
- Base: The base trim starts the lineup with the redesigned Forester’s core utility and safety focus.
- Premium: Premium adds a step up in everyday comfort and convenience.
- Sport: Sport brings a more expressive personality to the lineup.
- Limited: Limited adds more upscale equipment for buyers who want a richer cabin experience.
- Wilderness: Wilderness is the best fit if you want the most capable Forester model, with a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, extra body cladding, anodized copper accents, water-resistant artificial leather, all-weather floor mats, a rubber cargo mat, a 180-degree forward view camera system, Active Torque Split AWD, X-Mode Dual Mode traction settings, 17-inch wheels, increased ground clearance, more underbody protection, and a full-size all-terrain spare tire.
- Touring: Touring sits at the top of the gas-only lineup with the most premium overall presentation.
What Subaru Forester do most buyers choose?
The Subaru Forester years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 5,778 | 35.5% |
| 2024 | 5,251 | 34.9% |
| 2023 | 4,602 | 35.5% |
| 2026 | 4,175 | 35.8% |
| 2022 | 4,037 | 36.5% |
| 2019 | 3,236 | 34% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they offer a strong mix of newer features, broad availability, and enough supply to give you more shopping choices. They also sit close enough to current-model pricing that many buyers can balance value with modern equipment.
What is the Subaru Forester's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $24,434 | −8.27% |
| 2024 | $28,980 | −7.37% |
| 2025 | $31,503 | −5.57% |
| 2021 | $21,994 | −5.24% |
| 2019 | $18,902 | −5.16% |
| 2020 | $20,932 | −4.1% |
| 2023 | $27,019 | −3.94% |
| 2014 | $9,826 | −3.67% |
| 2018 | $16,253 | −3.62% |
| 2017 | $14,691 | −2.7% |
| 2016 | $12,474 | −2.67% |
| 2015 | $11,266 | −1.05% |
Most model years in the table are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used and let someone else absorb the biggest price drop. The newer years show some of the largest declines, while the older years are changing more slowly. That creates a wide spread of opportunities depending on whether you want the newest features or the lowest entry price.
The 2015, 2016, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Subaru Forester now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.57% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.37%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 34.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $31,503. The Subaru Forester offers a practical cabin with strong visibility and everyday usefulness.
Consider waiting if:

Many appreciate the safety features and comfortable ride, making it a top choice for families and adventurous individuals alike. However, some owners have expressed concerns about performance, particularly the lack of power and sluggish acceleration, as well as the outdated styling in certain models. The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

Right number of features. Great value. Solid vehicle. Missing? Maybe extras like fancy media, swoopy dashboards and soft armrests. Perfect utility vehicle.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru Forester on Apr 7, 2025
I fell in love with this car at first sight. I drove and considered a 2025 Forester to compare and could not move to 2025. The 2017 Forester is friendly, bright, wide visibility, you sit high in it, it has a smooth ride and has all the basics that you need. My particular pre-owned model had a quality I cannot describe that is probably due to the previous owner but it is a perfect car. I would not hesitate to buy at 2017 Forester, unless it is truly toward the end of its life.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact SUV that emphasizes practicality, all-weather confidence, and everyday usability. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive is standard, and the Forester’s reputation for reliability, safety, and strong visibility remains central to its appeal. It also offers a spacious interior and a large cargo area, which makes it especially attractive to buyers who want a useful family vehicle rather than something flashy.
For 2024, the Forester’s appeal is rooted in its balanced setup. It uses a 2.5-liter boxer engine paired with a continuously variable transmission, and the available fuel economy is competitive at 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Subaru also equips every model with EyeSight driver assist technology, while higher trims add features such as the 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and additional comfort and convenience upgrades. The cabin benefits from more premium materials, a redesigned dashboard, and increased insulation, all of which help the Forester feel quieter and more refined than its practical mission might suggest.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The CVT can feel sluggish, and there is no turbocharged engine option in this generation. Even so, the 2024 Subaru Forester remains appealing because it combines standard AWD, useful space, and a strong safety focus in a package that is easy to live with.
