Is the Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the Subaru Forester is a strong used-car pick if you want a practical SUV with broad owner appeal and a long-running reputation for usefulness. The all-generations owner rating is 4.62/5 across every model year in the data.

What Subaru Forester do most buyers choose?
The Subaru Forester years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 5,960 | 37% |
| 2024 | 5,379 | 36.2% |
| 2023 | 4,672 | 36.1% |
| 2026 | 4,262 | 38.2% |
| 2022 | 4,019 | 36.8% |
| 2019 | 3,333 | 36.2% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, more pricing spread to shop, and a newer-feeling package that still sits below the newest model-year pricing.
What is the Subaru Forester's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $24,216 | −8.46% |
| 2024 | $28,759 | −7.33% |
| 2025 | $31,270 | −6.24% |
| 2021 | $21,910 | −5.35% |
| 2019 | $18,772 | −5.08% |
| 2020 | $20,825 | −4.23% |
| 2023 | $26,871 | −3.84% |
| 2014 | $9,754 | −3.13% |
| 2018 | $16,232 | −3.03% |
| 2016 | $12,557 | −2.57% |
| 2017 | $14,685 | −2.18% |
| 2015 | $11,180 | −1.35% |
The table shows broad downward movement across every model year, which is good news if you want to buy used. The larger drops on newer years create more room for value, while the smaller declines on older years suggest steadier pricing on the most affordable options.
The 2015, 2017, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Subaru Forester now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −6.24% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.33%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 37% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36.2%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $31,270. The Subaru Forester offers a roomy cabin and a practical, easy-to-live-with character that suits everyday family use.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: the latest Forester Wilderness uses a normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and Subaru estimates 26 mpg in combined driving.
- Tech: the latest model includes a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: the latest model adds improved rear seatbelts and includes EyeSight with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist.
- Starting price: the gas-only 2026 Forester lineup starts at $31,445.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Overall, drivers have consistently praised the Subaru Forester across all model years for its reliability, spacious interiors, and excellent all-wheel drive capabilities. Many appreciate the safety features and comfortable ride, making it a top choice for families and adventurous individuals alike. However, some owners have expressed concerns about performance, particularly the lack of power and sluggish acceleration, as well as the outdated styling in certain models. Despite these downsides, the Forester is viewed as a practical and dependable option that often provides great value for money.

The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

Right number of features. Great value. Solid vehicle. Missing? Maybe extras like fancy media, swoopy dashboards and soft armrests. Perfect utility vehicle.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru Forester on Apr 7, 2025
I fell in love with this car at first sight. I drove and considered a 2025 Forester to compare and could not move to 2025. The 2017 Forester is friendly, bright, wide visibility, you sit high in it, it has a smooth ride and has all the basics that you need. My particular pre-owned model had a quality I cannot describe that is probably due to the previous owner but it is a perfect car. I would not hesitate to buy at 2017 Forester, unless it is truly toward the end of its life.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact SUV that leans hard into practicality, visibility, and all-weather confidence. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive is standard, and the Forester’s reputation for reliability and value remains a major part of its appeal. It also offers a spacious interior and a large cargo area, which makes it especially attractive to buyers who want an easy-to-live-with family vehicle rather than something flashy.
For 2024, the Forester’s strengths are rooted in its balanced setup: a 2.5-liter boxer engine with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft works with a CVT, while standard EyeSight safety tech adds adaptive cruise control, Pre-Collision Braking, lane departure and sway warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Higher trims bring more comfort and convenience, including an eight-inch touchscreen on upper versions, a panoramic power moonroof, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and available blind-spot and rear cross-traffic features. The Sport trim adds a more aggressive look with dark trim and orange accents, while the Limited and Touring trims bring more upscale touches such as leather upholstery, a power rear gate, ventilated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The CVT can feel sluggish, and the latest generation does not offer a turbocharged engine option. Even so, the 2024 Subaru Forester remains appealing because it combines standard AWD, strong visibility, useful space, and a long-running reputation for durability in a package that is easy to recommend for everyday use.
